sports roundup Problems for Dragons

sports roundup BY JOHN WALTERS Sports Writer They call themselves the Dragons, but the athletes at Dadeland Country Day School aren't breathing fire these days. Given only 40 male students in grades nine through 12, the school has an initial population problem just mustering enough bodies for varsity athletics. Athletic Director Bob Morton has always managed — so far — to come through with a well balanced sports program, but the school has had problems with turnover in athletic personnel and with getting enough space for physical expansion. A bicentennial trip took much of the school's population to Philadelphia recently and then the football coach, Bob Carr, resigned. Carr took another job in Atlanta, leaving the school without a baseball coach and without a spring football coach. That cut the Dragons out of the spring football jamboree. Dadeland, at 9990 N. Kendall Dr., is jammed between apartment houses and a deserted golf course. The school has growth potential but not room for expansion. There is room, however, for optimism. The school's football quarterback, Bobby Reissert, has a cheerful "wait until next year" attitude. "Next season, we are getting some new blood at the school!" Reissert said. "We'll get a lot of kids from Killian and our football and basketball teams can prosper, given these extra people. And given the space and faculty support and lack of absenteeism, he may be right and the Dragons could move up from smoky dreamers to fire breathers once again

Seas calm for weekend

Winds and high seas will diminish this weekend and fishing will be good for those who venture out. In South Dade, there will be good trout action in the grassbeds of Barnes Sound near the radar dome and activity has also been reported in Blackwater Sound and Blackwater Pass. Use live shrimp or Mirrolures. There will be a few snook and small snapper at night. In the Keys, good sail action is expected and excellent dolphin prospects are in view close to the edge of the blue, along with some wahoo. Bottom fishing will be great over the "hump" for black yellow fin and Warsaw grouper up to 300 pounds deep jigging or trolling with down riggers. There will also be good tarpon action in the cuts and channels, fair bonefish and permit in the back country. It will be good for sail, kings, mackerel and dolphin offshore around Cosgrove Light in the Key West area. Some amberjack and small cobia will be found around the wrecks and permit on the flats.

flying fisherman

Excellent trout action is expected in Biscayne Bay on the grassbeds off Mercy and Mt. Sinai Hospitals and on the west side of the Bay from Dinner Key to the Cutler Ridge plant. Drift fish with live shrimp and popping cork until you find a school, then drop anchor and use chum. Bonefish are fair on the flats from Stiltsville through Elliot's Key on jigs tipped with shrimp.
