'On the Move' for Christ in song

“Pollution, pollution Here is a good solution There should be prosecution Of every institution That contributes to pollution!” On Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons, the verse — which sounds like a jingle from an environmentalist campaign — reverberates from the walls of Old Cutler Presbyterian Church. “On the Move,” the church's youthful singing group, is practicing. Directed by Joyce Fink, the 27 high school and college-age youngsters are going over and over the program for an upcoming musical they will present May 22 and 23 entitled “One Way.” For two months, On the Move has been singing the same songs and members of the group have been trying out for the lead parts. Joan Cottingham was awarded the part of Cathy, and Ken Anderson wonthe role of Joey. The musical tells the story of a young couple who fall in love while at college. Cathy is a strong Christian, but Joey is unsure of his faith. After exploring different avenues, Cathy finally shows Joey that Jesus Christ is the “One Way” to salvation. Stage manager for the production is Steve Whang and accompanist is R. Denver Cain. Mrs. Fink, who was a music instructor at Palmetto High School several years ago, started On the Move only last August. Since then, she said, the group has progressed surprisingly. “The spirit within the group is fantastic,” she said. “And they have grown a great deal musically because of this.” On the Move is composed of students from Westminster Christian School, Palmetto, Killian and Miami-Dade Community College. Guitars, bass and drums are an important part of the group, which performs bicentennial and contemporary religious music at different area churches. In addition, On the Move gives a multimedia slide presentation depicting scenes of America. “It's definitely a ministry to the young people. It's been exemplified because we've had several join the church after being in the group,” said Ms. Fink. But the students make up only one of Old Cutler's five choirs. The church also has a Choir, composed of children from kindergarten through second grade; a Junior Choir, including children from thir through fifth grades; the “Sounds of Faith,” with sixth, seventh and eighth grade youngsters; and the Chancel Choir, made up of adults. Ms. Fink said that of the 1,000 members in the congregation, 200 are involved in a music program. Her husband, Dr. Philip H. Fink, head of the music department at FIU, is director of music at Old Cutler. “One Way” will be presented Saturday, May 22, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 23, at 6 p.m. Old Cutler Presbyterian Church is located at 14401 Old Cutler Rd. Pastors are Rev. Robert R. Davis and Rev. Paul M. Rose. — ELIZABETH OWEN
