the times-guide visits . . . ronnie and peter bermont They let the sun shine throughout their home
By ERICA MEYER Staff Writer Yellow — bright, sunny yellow, echoing the Florida sun — shines throughout Peter and Ronnie Bermont's Coral Gables home. Twinned with blue, it illuminates the living room and master bedroom; with Kelly green and white, it lights the kitchen and with pastel pinks and oranges, it turns 16-month-old Bill's nursery into a gay, cheerful hideaway. Ronnie likes yellow. When the Bermonts bought the house three years ago, Ronnie replaced the former murky color scheme with new wallpaper and paint even before the family moved in. Soothing colors highlight even those few rooms where yellow isn't the keynote. Five-year-old Tracy's room, for example, is primarily cotton-candy pink. Tracy's doll collection crowds the shelves built into her room and her stuffed animals almost cover the quilted bedspreads' dark and light pink squares rimmed in accenting yellow and green. "This is a room she can grow up in," Ronnie said, pointing out the new white desk between the two white dressers. Tracy will have many uses for the small neat desk. Though only in nursery school, she's already a Dr. Seuss and Madeline book fan. Bill's nursery is smaller, but equally well adapted to his needs. A white crib sits in one corner next to a bassinet and a chest of drawers. A playbox with an attached sliding board is in the center of the room and a bright purple stuffed elephant — just the right size for sitting on — is in the nook next to the door. The curtains are bright yellow with cartooned horses and other animals in the pattern. The vinyl floor is a geometric mix of soft shades of yellow, green, pink and orange. One of the rooms Ronnie still has plans for is the master bedroom. A new set of furniture is on the way. Though the current decor is attractive, she says it doesn't provide enough storage. Polished wood bedside tables and bureaus are set off by yellow walls and white windows with fabric panels in the same blue and white pattern as the bedspread. A yellow shag rug and an adjoining blue bathroom complete the color scheme. In the master bedroom, as in the living room and study, Ronnie's needlepoint pillows add a personal and creative touch to the decor. One cushion in the study is beige with needlepointed string and mailing labels — fashioned to look like a packing box. It sets off the black, brown and white upholstery on the twin sofas and the brown, salt and pepper shag rug. Ronnie's desk is in one corner of the study. A classy, interesting decorating accent is an antique ticker tape machine. A blue and yellow entry hall from the front door leads to both the den and the living room. The living room then leads to the pool. Because of the expected traffic of little wet feet from the pool area, Ronnie carpeted See THEIR, Page 20 Ronnie Bermont . . . with baby Bill Photos by ELIZABETH OWEN Corner of living room is highlighted . . . with painting by Ronnie's uncle Living room has yellow walls, yellow armchair . . . and blue, white and yellow sofa completes the picture Bill looks for pet beagle under 5-year-old Tracy's bed . . . which is covered with dolls and stuffed toys
