Young rabbi has Samu-El on the move

By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer So far, Rabbi Edwin Farber, 25-year-old co-leader of Temple Samu-El, has found his new position rather harried. "It's been very hectic," said the South Dade rabbi, youngest and newest conservative rabbi in the Miami area. "This is such a fast-growing Jewish community that it's hard to keep up with the needs. "But it's been a very positive experience because I've gotten a good reaction from the surrounding Jewish community. "I remember when I attended temple on Friday. nights during the summer, the attendance was very poor. But since I've been at Samu-El, we've had an increasing Friday night attendance through June, July and August." Rabbi Farber conducted his first service at the Farber temple, 8900 SW 107th Ave., Friday, Aug. 18. Although he lived in Miami several years ago — when his family moved here from Bronx, N.Y. in 195 — he has since been studying in New York and Jerusalem. After he graduated from Miami Norland High School and received his initial religious training at Congregation B'nai Raphael, he went on to Columbia University in New York where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in American History. Also at Columbia, the young rabbi participated in a program with the Jewish Theological Seminary and received a Bachelor of Hebrew Literature. the Seminary and during the program spent two years in Israel at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Rabbi Farber is presently working toward a Doctor of Hebrew Literature. specializing in Biblical studies. Temple Samu-El, said Rabbi Farber, has great potential, both as a religious center for its congregants and to be a potent force in the community .He will be in charge of youth activities and religious education, two areas he hopes to develop fully. "One of my main interests is adult education, and we are going to institute a broad program, including regular classes, workshops, guest lecturers, and a film series, said the rabbi. "The Jewish population wants to learn about Jewish history and issues on a sophisticated level. They synagogue should be the center of information for its members on all issues facing the community. "Jews should not have to gather information concerning these vital areas from The New York Times." Rabbi Farber's wife, Laurie, who just gave birth to a baby boy, Zev Israel Farber, Aug. 8, has a Masters in Jewish Education from the Seminary, will also be active in religious training at the temple. Temple Samu-El, which is three years old, was formed by . three Jewish families from the Kendale Lakes area. The congregation, now numbering 200 families, is in the middle of a membership drive.
