Dream of transport for handicapped collapsing
From Page 1 said Archie. "I finally get here on my own grass, standing on my own street curb and I get turned down by the very people that are supposed to help us the most, Dade County," he added. "I had to wait for five different buses to get here today. Two buses broke down and the other two never showed up," Archie said. "Then the county commissioners wonder why all these cripples and handicapped people are on welfare lines. One of the reasons is because they have no way of getting any place on time, if at all." A native of Georgia, Archie first came to Florida in 1943. He was a tiling contractor for 14 years before his accident. His handicap was a result of an accident in a swimming pool in 1965, when he fell and fractured his head. "I took a gamble because I wanted those buses more than anything," he said. "But if I don't get these buses, I don't know how in the world to start over again, but I will. "I wish people who have the money to help us would get a taste of what it's like to stand out on a curb in a low-rent district and wait for a bus that doesn't come. "Or be like a woman who wrote me a letter asking me to please find a way to take her to the beach. 'Mr. Roberts,' she said, 'please take me to the beach. I've never seen the ocean.'" In order to receive the federal monies, Archie has to obtain written committments from local agencies to use the system and specify the means by which they will reimburse United Handicaps for the operational costs of the buses. The agencies that could be involved include those dealing in state vocational programs, senior citizens programs, state and county welfare programs and other local social services agencies. According to Archie, he has never been contacted by the county. After appearing before the County Commission several months ago, he was told that he would be called before the finance committee. "What they have done is a social rape," Archie said. "They didn't even notify me or call me before the finance committee. "They just ignored my plea from another handicapped fool.
Nominations sought
Dade County's Employ the Handicapped Committee has set Sept. 15 as the deadline for submitting entries for its 1976 awards. Nominees for the awards in the seven categories must work or live in Dade County. Nominations should be mailed to Dade's Employ the Handicapped Committee, 2501 Coral Way, Miami, Fla. 33145. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each category, as well as to persons nominating the winners.
Have a say in recreation programs
Would you like to see a recreation program on gymnastics, a class on ceramics, a course in bike repair or some other pet program included in Dade County Parks and Recreation's South Dade plans. The Parks and Recreation department thought you would. A special hot line (854-1531) will be opened starting Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 2 to 8 p.m. for South Miami and South Dade residents to call the Parks people and suggest programs for local parks. Chris Warren, spokesman for the department said calls from people who would like to teach particular courses or hobbies in their own neighborhood parks would also be welcome. "We need people to tell us what they want to participate in," Warren said, "so we can tailor our recreation program to their wants."
