Community schools expect funding
Coral Gables' three community schools — Ponce de Leon, Merrick and Carver — are now expected to be included in the city's 1976-77 budget, although the allotment has been a center of controversy. When a $26,000 grant was approved last year, the city commission ruled it would be the final allocation from the program. This year, however, Commission Al Jacobson has stated that he will refuse to consider a budget that does not have community schools listed. Public hearings on the budget are scheduled to begin next week. It is expected that the program will be included under the recreation department, (where department head Don Hart has said he would welcome it as an addition to his budget, but not as a replacement for other recreational programs). Going on the assumption that the program will be funded, Ponce de Leon Community School has announced its schedule of fall classes, beginning the week of Sept. 13. Elementary school children will be offered classes in wood shop, sketching, leather crafts, guitar, baton or ballet. Junior high students can study gymnastics, piano or tennis. And for all from senior high age to senior citizens, classes will be available in sports, handicrafts and practical knowledge. The class list includes: bridge, celestial navigation, guitar, home repair, judo, know your car, macrame, motorcycle repair, music appreciation, piano, pottery, stained glass technique, tennis, watercolors, basic boating, re-upholstery, Russian, sailboat handling, sewing, horticulture and yoga.
