SM paper gets day in court
By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer Federal court judge Norman Roehger agreed Tuesday to hear on Tuesday, Nov. 16, "Cobra Beat" student editor Mario-Rodriguez' plea for the right to publish his magazine. "Cobra Beat" is a fledgling South Miami High School magazine sponsored by the school's Spanish Spirit Society. The administration claimed "Cobra Beat" did not follow guidelines set forth by the school and the October issue was cancelled. Rodriguez claims the guidelines were an infringement on his rights of free speech and took the issue to the American Civil Liberties Union, where it was referred to Attorney Steve Raskin. Raskin filed a federal suit last Thursday on behalf of Rodriguez and is hopeful that the problem will be resolved in time to publish the November issue. School administration officials said the publication must have no advertisers in common with the school's newspaper, the "Serpent's Tail" and that any articles printed in Spanish must also appear in English.
