SPORTS Tennis Day

Archie Stone, left, accepts a proclamation from Dade County Mayor Stephen P. Clark declaring Dec. 3-5 as Costa del Sol/Western Airlines Celebrity Tennis Tournament Weekend in Dade County. Stone, a South Dade resident, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Archie Stone-Foundation, a non-profit, charitable organization which benefits South Dade's Variety Children's Hospital and sports oriented youth groups in South Florida. Proceeds from the tournament, which will feature the top tennis playing celebrities from Hollywood as well as professional players, goes to the foundation.

Biltmore golf winners

The results of the Biltmore Women's Golf Association's yearly Ringer Tournament have been announced. In the Championship Flight, low gross went to Mary Brown with a 64 and low net was captured by Edna Martens with a 49. Other results were: Class A: Low Gross Mary McCrackin 68, low Net Ann Roll 47. Class B: Low Gross, Vi Shillington, 73, low Net Helen Singer 48. Class C: Low Gross Beatrice Seditch 75 and Low Net Aley Neidlinger 50.

Jr. OB tourney offers treat

A unique team competition between South Africa and the United States will follow the Orange Bowl International Junior Golf Championships Dec. 31. The four top U.S. finishers in the Orange Bowl Tournament will play a South African junior team in the 18-hole event at the Coral Gables' Biltmore Course, according to tournament Chairman. Tony Mantinan. South Africa team members, sponsored by that nation's Golf Foundation and Gary Player, are also expected to compete in the 72-hole Orange Bowl event, to be played Dec. 27-30 at Biltmore. Won last year by Miami's Bill May, who is now over 17 and thus inelegible to return, the invitational tournament features 100 of the world's top juniors in medal-play competition.
