School area cul-de-sac approved Surprise victory for SD citizens

By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer A citizen-proposed cul-de-sac in front of Miami Heights Elementary School was approved Tuseday by the Metro Commission with a little fanfare. A citizen's group began last May to oppose Metro's plan to straighten 117th Avenue, which runs in front of the school playground. The S-shaped street in front of the school is blamed by area residents for the fact that three children were struck by cars there in the past school year. In July, Metro approved the widened road, but citizen's vowed to lay down in front of the bulldozers and Metro reconsidered. Then in late September, a committee appointed by the commission heard angry citizens express opposition to the straightened road. Although the citizens felt they had convinced the commissioners at the hearing Tuesday's Metro decision came as a surprise. The proposed cul-de-sac, which calls for the construction of curbs, shrubbery, parking lots and sidewalks where the street now runs, would completely block off traffic in front of the school. The plan has been passed on to the Metro Public Works department, which will work on construction in cooperation with the Traffic and Transportation department. "The citizen's sketch will be worked into the whole plan," said Bill Powell, director of Public Works. "But we haven't even started yet. It will probably be a couple of months before construction begins."
