Quota Club looking for help to reach it

By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Two thousand dollars would to it. If the Quota Club of Coral Gables can get enough Coral Gables and South Dade people to support its fund-raising for the Hearing and Speech Center of Florida this weekend, the center can pay back its loan. The Hearing and Speech Center, located at 3001 Ponce in Coral Gables, surpassed its annual of $86,700 and had to borrow money in order to continue its services to the community, according to executive director Carolyn Everett. Men, women and children with speech or hearing handicaps depend on the center for necessary diagnosis and treatment. since patients are charged on a sliding scale, the center foots the bill for disadvantaged families and must rely on United Fund monies and private donations to stay alive. The Quota Club, a national a'sociation of business and professional women, traditionaly supports hearing and speech centers across the country. The Coral Gables club is sponsoring the fundraising for its local center Sunday, Nov. 7, at 3691 Douglas Rd., Coconut Grove, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets — at $5 apiece — will be available at the door. Douglas named CG officer of month

Coral Gables Police Officer James Douglas was named officer of the month at the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club luncheon last week. Douglas, who was shot in the forearm and suffered partial loss of hearing in the line of duty, received a $50 award and plaque from the Financial Institute of Coral Gables at the Kiwanis luncheon held at the Coral Gables Country Club Tuesday. Officer Douglas was sitting in his police car at Jefferson Street and South Dixie Highway on Sept. 27, when a young man came up to him and said "Take this," and fired his .38 caliber gun, stricking Douglas in the left forearm near the elbow. Douglas pulled his weapon and struck the suspect in the shoulder several times. The suspect, later identified by police as Christopher Williams, 18, of 4726 Jefferson St. fled on foot. He was arrested by the officers in a back up unit after the suspect's family called an ambulance. The suspect was charged with attempted murder, use of a firearm and resisting arrest. Douglas was taken to Doctor's Hospital. His partial hearing loss came as a result of the noise caused by the firing of a weapon inside the police car. Douglas
