Everything must go at Gables mansion garage sale

By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer When Chris Tyson has a garage sale, she really goes all out. The Tysons, who have lived in one of the oldest homes in Coral Gables for the past 19 years, are moving to Washington, D.C. Consequently, their 53-year-old mansion at 1498 Seville Ave., will be the scene of perhaps the largest "garage sale" in Coral Gables this Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. The Tysons are donating most of their furniture to the sale which is actually being sponsored by the Vassar Club of South Florida. Mrs. Tyson, a graduate of Vassar, along with other area Vassar alumnae, are having the fund raiser to provide a scholarship for a local high school student who plans to attend their alma mater. The Tysons' home is one of the early Coral Gables mansions, built in 1923 on the Biltmore Golf Course. At one time, it was called Peacock Manor. Most of the family's furniture throughout the seven bedroom, seven bath home will be on sale this weekend, including an antique grand piano. "There are all kinds of things that we will sell, like wedding gifts given to us 22 years ago that we have never used," said Mrs. Tyson. "There are also a lot of items that we have collected throughout the past 19 and a half years in Coral Gables, gifts from all over the world and country, lots of books and children's toys." The Tyson's have seven children, although only the two youngest live at home now. Other members of the club have also donated a wide variety of items for the sale including jewelry, antiques, old books, a set of 1730 sterling silver spoons and clothes from Saks and Lily Pulitzer. "I've been cleaning out my closets for several days and there are just so many things that I can't take with me." she said. "It's hard to break away from some of the things, but we really have no use for them anymore. So why not donate it so some boy or girl can go to Vassar." The family is leaving town because Chris Tyson has been named general manager of American Iron & Steel Institute in Washington. The sale on Sunday will be held until 5 p.m., and all purchases are tax deductible.

Woman claims UFO sighting on way to job

By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Alina Santos thought something was up as she pulled up to the traffic light at SW 72nd Street and 61st Avenue early Monday morning on her way to work. It was 7:45 a.m., and seven cars were at a dead stop before a green light. She really rubbed her eyes when the young man in the car next to hers pointed frantically toward the sky. She noticed all the other people sitting in their cars, gazing toward the sky, and she looked up, too. An eerie-looking dark gray cloud that stood out from all the others hung overhead, and a pleasant golden reflection glowed luminously from behind. A large, brilliantly white, saucer-shapped object with a dome on top — the size of a 747 jet — hovered cautiously just above the cloud. For three or four minutes Alina and her early morning companions watched the "thing." Its main section spun continuously, and the cone remained stationary. All the while, it See UFO, Page 8

Flu shots don't hurt, they say

By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer Rumor has it that swine flu shots really don't hurt a bit — all you have to do is turn your head the other way. However, if you are young and healthy and just along for the ride, you can also get a shot at the same time, but your innoculation will not contain the additional A-Victoria flu vaccine that the older folks are getting.
