South Dade rabbi forms Judaic Universal Temple
By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Rabbi Michael Kyrr is founding a new concept, but he is working it out very quietly and very cautiously. After being associated with a number of established temples and synagogues in Dade County over the past 12 years, the middle-aged rabbi, cantor and concert singer has embarked upon his own brainchild: the Judaic Universal Temple. Since the High Holy Days during the latter part of September, the newly-formed religious group has been meeting at Kendall Community Church, 9990 N. Kendall Dr. In the future, it hopes to have some property and a temple of its own. According to Rabbi Kyrr, the temple is based on the Jewish faith, but is moving ahead more futuristically. Rabbi Kyrr "We feel that religion in general, Judaism included, tends to become separatistic in its attitudes — toward using religious institutions as social centers," he said. "People cannot really join in the brotherhood they'd so dearly love to see affected." A way to attain this brotherhood — and the only one, as far as he is concerned — is to worship in many different faiths, and to accept strangers into your own. Rabbi Kyrr himself has participated sincerely in a variety of faiths, most recently Catholicism. "Lately I've experienced great satisfaction and strength from worshiping in the Catholic faith," he said. "The clergy said that the reason I'm accepted in love is that I come to worship, not simply to observe. He and his congregation espouse that God is the totality of all creation, and that there is no significant division between life and death. The Judaic Universal Temple, true to its leader's ideas, offers a general religious education program geared toward his concepts. Worship services are held and music is considered a vital part. The first time Rabbi Kyrr spoke to his congregation, he felt an electric response. 'Members approached him afterwards and told him it was the first time they felt they had really prayed, the first time they were truly united in prayer. 'The significant thing is reaching out to other beings," he said. "Love is the one guiding and unifying factor in this world, and everything else springs from that."
