Jolly Green Thumb BY MARY FUREY CRYMES
Put a little drama in your life with an indoor tree. No room, you say, or no time for messing with trees? Tsk, tsk: you're missing out on a good thing. Potted trees have multiple decor uses and are sure conversation pieces. They're easy care and dependable. For instance, the Norfolk Pine is a handsome and thirstless wonder that dresses up a hall mirror or Aunt Hattie's portrait. Just give it light and a little air. If yours is an Oriental-inspired decor, set it off with popular Bambusa Multiplex. This common garden bamboo produces airy green leaves, grows five feet high and propagates like crazy. Remember granny's rubber plant? It filled up a corner in her old fashioned home and one will do the same for yours, with little or no maintenance. If you're adventuresome, try another member of the ficus family. benjamin, or weeping fig. This first cousin of the rubber tree has broad, twisted leaves, and constantly moves as it weeping. It offers no fruit for fig lovers but lots of lush greenery. Trees can be potted in a variety of tubs, boxes and baskets and pruned and trimmed to express your creativity. Look for well established plants at the nursery and check by grasping the trunk and rocking back and forth. If it's loose in the pot, most likely it's a root cutting, rushed by the grower to the nursery before it has time to root properly. Reject it in favor of a sturdier variety and enjoy an indoor tree in your home year around.
