5. Respect the child.
Children have rights, too. Stop- and think: how would you address the child if you imagined other parents were observing how you handled the situation... or you imagined the child to be older. How would you address an employe who had made a mistake, but one that you certainly wanted to retain? 6. Induce respect for order. The best way to get the child to respect order is to have the child participate in keeping his room and the house, etc., in order. Children should have responsibilities and these should be met before going on a picnic, going out to play or whatever. They should not be too time-consuming or too difficult but well within the child's capabilities. Even if the child earns something for his efforts, don't forget to praise a job well-done. 7. Induce respect for the rights of others. Parents, too, have rights. Let the child know the logical reasons why a parent needs time to read, think, relax. And have the child learn respect for the rights of other children, that you will let him/her eat provided that you select the food and that he/she sits down to eat it at the table, eating slowly. Then make sure he gets healthful, low-calorie food. 13. Avoid giving undue attention. Most bad habits get progressively worse with constant harping. It is better not to make a big issue over transgressions. Some children will accept any kind of punishment if only to get the attention. 14. Act! Keep your mouth shut. Getting up off your chair and stopping disruptive behavior is a lot more effective than hollering. 15. Learn to say "no" and use discretion in pleasing. Children don't really even want everything they suddenly propose by whim. They will get over demands and requests for candy etc. if they realize that"no" means exactly that. 16. Win co-operation. Don't demand it. This calls for creative parenting. yard work ... painting the house. You can make homemade ice cream with everybody taking a turn at the crank. And it's a good idea to make mealtime a time of sharing and a fun time to be together. Enjoy your family while they are young and chances are you'll have many good family get-togethers when the children have grown up. COPYRIGHT 1976 KEY NEWSPAPER COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMMING 05106
