SMPD investigates flyer source

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer The printers and distributors of an unsigned and potentially libelous flyer which was circulated in South Miami, attacking Police Chief Sal Vizzini and other administrators of the police department, could face up to a year in prison for their labors. This was brought out by Chief Vizzini at a recent city council meeting after Councilwoman Mrs. Cathy McCann asked the chief if any effort was being made to determine who distributed the leaflets. "An investigation is under way now by the police department's internal affairs section," Vizzini said, "and when it is found who printed and distributed the flyers, they will be arrested and prosecuted." Those who published and distributed the sheets could be prosecuted under a state statute which makes it unlawful to print and circulate such statements without the author and printer being identified. There were two flyers, one of which went to members of the city council and others in the city which made verbal attacks on Chief Vizzini, Police Captain Martin Baum, Police Lieutenant Ron Romine and City Manager Jack Present. A less volatile flyer was distributed in downtown South Miami which asked a series of questions concerning the turnover rate of city employes and the treatment of longtime employes.
