CG woman heeds call to priesthood

By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Carroll Mallin, a 43-year-old Coral Gables housewife, is one of three local women who have been approved by the Episcopalian church to study for the deaconate. The honor is significant, since the priesthood was opened to women only in September. By a tradition-shattering vote of 124 to 103 by lay and clergy leaders at their triennial general convention, the decision was made Thursday, Sept. 16. But all four Florida dioceses voted against the change, so the task before Carroll won't be an easy one. She has tackled the first of the hurdles before her: the vestry and rector of her church, St. Thomas Episcopal in South Dade, sent their approval of her studies to the bishop, the Right Reverend James L. Duncan, and he, in turn, sent his approval to a screening committee. She passed the required psychological and physical tests, and was granted permission to begin her seminary studies by the commission on ministry. The body oversees Carroll's spiritual development, and monitors her progress every six months. She has been studying for six months, in a small group that is an extension program from Suwannee, the University of the South, and she must continue for another three years. In addition, she is working toward her Bachelor of Arts degree at FIU, where she is specializing in religion and criminal justice. So far, she has encountered little opposition in her pursuit. Her family and church support her, and even Bishop Duncan, who voted against the ordination of women, has encouraged her. This, especially, has goaded her on. Carroll admitted that a few individual male priests have shown some hostility, but in general, she said she's been warmly received. The shape Carroll's life is taking is to her a natural progression. For a dozen years, she has worked for the church — as a Sunday school teacher, in the vestry, with youth groups and as coordinator of communication in the bishop's office. Carroll has always been an activist. Besides raising two children, a son 17 and a daughter 14, she has contributed to Time-Life books and Crown Collier Encyclopedias, has written a biography of Francois Duvalier, and served as a stringer for the U.S. Information Agency. For seven years, she was a Water Safety Instructor for the Red Cross, and developed a swimming program for victims of cerebral palsy. When she gets her degree from FIU, she intends to begin volunteer work at Jackson Memorial Hospital, possibly in the Rape Treatment Center. She is also gearing her seminary studies toward institutional work: she visualizes herself as a chaplain in a jail or mental hospital.
