Federation Tuesday CG resident to speak on careers

By KAY SEVERINSEN Staff Writer Can A Coral Gables woman with three young children and a time-consuming, successful career find happiness? Elaine Silverstein, of Bebec, Silverstein, and Partners, thinks its possible and will be telling all about it at the Federation Tuesday Seminar Tuesday, Nov. 9, on Miami Beach. Federation Tuesday is sponsored by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and consists of discussions with Shana Alexander of Newsweek, Elen Goodman of the Boston Globe, Walter Dartland Dade County consumer advocate and many others, including Ms. Silverstein. Ms. Silverstein, who in the past five years has built a successful advertising agency from scratch, will discuss the problems career women face today. This is a momumental area of concern," she says. "Forty-eight per cent of the work force are women and most are married and have kids." To be a career woman, Ms. Silverstein feels she has had to overcome a great deal of prejudice. "There is a lot of pressure to feel guilt if you work because of your family, but where is it written that a woman is responsible for the whole family and child care?" She says the purpose of Federation Tuesday is to open minds. "I feel that people are not aware of the important things going on," she says. "People ar only concerned with their own little live'. For more information about Federation Tuesday, call Steve Robin, 576-4000. "My message is: courage ladies! It's a big wonderful world. and it's worth the price because now we can be anything we want." Not all career women are out in front, making headlines and speeches. A great many of them don't even make salaries. One such is Ellen Mandler, of South Miami. She is the Federation's Women's Division community education vice president, and has been largely responsible for the 1,000 people who will attend Federation Tuesday. She considers her volunteer work for the Federation "Just about a full-time job." "My husband and I share our resources equally with our children for which we are mutally responsible. That's very exciting."
