Columbus runners place 8th of 21

By MICHAEL CALLAHAN Columbus High Correspondent Friday, Nov. 5, Columbus' cross country team ended their season by placing eight out of 21 schools in the District 8 championships at Tamiami Park. Three Columbus runners broke the 16 minute barrier for the three mile run. Devin Maguire was the third runner to achieve this for Columbus this year. Maguire had a time of 15:59. John Cull came in tenth place with a time of 15:18. Senior Tom Gehret, led CCHS by breaking the school record for the third straight week. The new record set by Gehret is 15:08. This excellent time gave Gehret a seventh place finish out of 120 runners. Homecoming week at Columbus kicked off last Sunday afternoon with the Senior-Faculty football game and the Lourdes Junior-Senior Powder Puff game. The first game of this double-header proved to be a brutal, action packed game. Even though the faculty had never been beaten by the senior classes of previous years, the senior class of 1977 was determined to be the first senior team to defeat the faculty. The seniors were led by the electrifying play of Rick Diaz and Victor Pantin. Diaz returned a kickoff for a touchdown and Pantin carried an interception in for another senior score. These two touchdowns enabled the seniors to defeat the faculty, 13-6.
