Robberies get worse during lunchtime, merchants say

From Page 1 who give parking tickets," she added. Next door, at the Dolphins Cove, a health food store, the doors are also kept locked during certain hours of the day. "I see all these suspicious looking people walking around the street and there is nothing you can do to keep them out except to lock the door," said George Miller. Admitting that he keeps a weapon in the store and plans to get a shot gun soon, Miller says that it seems the only way to protect his property. "This is the trend. This is the way we are going," said Miller. "I have never used a weapon, except in the military, and I don't like it anymore than you do, but what else am I to do."

Cops beef up patrols on Mile for Christmas

With the trimmings on the light poles and Santa Claus at Merrick Park, also come the increased number of shoplifters on Miracle Mile and the commercial areas of the city. This year, like in the past, the Coral Gables Police Department is planning to beef up security around the Gables business district in an effort to deter crime. "Starting Dec. 6, there will be four special holiday policemen walking the beat," said Dennis Koronkiewicz, public information officer for the police department. "In addition to the walking officers, we will also have two additional police officers riding in the area to help shoppers and deter shoplifters," he added. Last year, the extra patrol proved to be quite helpful to the Mile merchants. "Last year it was a real life saver, said Bob Ullman, president of the Miracle Mile Association of Coral Gables, Inc. The fact that we'll have uniformed police officers on the street is a great help and the City of Coral Gables should be commended for that," Ullman added. "Shoplifters and everything else seem to come into the area with the season and the added patrol is another precaution," Ullman said.
