Football contest Winner picked 'toughest looking' team
Well, here's a new twist. The winner of our last week's football contest, 15-year-old Suzanne Lawton, won her $25 prize for "picking the toughest looking team names." Suzanne, a Southwest High School sophomore, admits to liking all football games, the Dolphins are her favorite team, but this is the first football contest she ever entered. A Pep Club member, she also baby sits, loves music, works at a summer camp and writes poetry. (She penned one for her high school's team.) Suzanne's brother Lyndon, 13, teased her about entering the contest but he'll be looking forward to tips from her for the next one. Suzanne, who lives with her family at 5355 SW 110th Ct., plans to do some Christmas shopping with her winnings. Suzanne Lawton . . . brother teased her
Flying Jaguars place third in meet; assured of spot in national contest
The Flying Jaguars of Miami-Dade Community College's South Campus are assured of competing in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's spring meet at Oklahoma State University. The Jaguar club, which placed third in a regional meeting that was hosted by Auburn University (Auburn, Ala.) will be competing in its fourth national intercollegiate meet. Burnside-Ott is donating two Cessna 150's for the use of the Jaguars at the national meet scheduled May 13-15 in Stillwater, Okla. Strong showings by several members of the team obtained the third place finish for the Jaguars and a berth at the national meeting, which has only 24 openings. Poor weather conditions which curtailed some of the events prevented a higher finish for the Jaguars as they were considered to be strong in some of the cancelled events, said Frances Sargent, club/faculty advisor and an instructor in M-DCC's Aviation Program. First place trophies were received by Roy Schooler, for a power-off spot landing; Bill Buchwald for power-on spot landings and for top pilot; and Charles Morris, for flight simulator competition. Other member of the team are: Rick Leibler, Elizabeth Puig, Judy Bouch, Nick Coule, Terry Saturday, Louis Fernandez, and Carol Bjork. Ms. Sargent said that all of the team's students are enrolled in the college's Aviation Program as well as being members of the Alpha Eta Rho, the National Aviation Fraternity. The students pay their own costs in practicing for competition and while competing, Ms. Sargent stated.
Gables youth captures first place in track meet
Charlie Humphrey, son of Mrs. Constance F. Gar- eret of Coral Gables, took first place and led his team to victory in an AIAA (Arizona Independent Athletic Association) cross country championship meet held recently (Nov. 13) in Phoenix. Humphrey, team captain, ran the 3.0 mile course in 15:58, the fastest time posted by twenty-six competitors from four Arizona schools. Humphrey has finished first or sec- ond in every meet this season, his third for Orme. Humphrey, a senior honor student, is student body president at Orme, an independent, coeduca- tional, college-preparatory board school with students in grades 8-12 near Mayer, Arizona, seventy-five miles north of Phoenix.
