Wrestling powers converge on Miami-Dade for national match
SPORTS More than a dozen major wrestling powers, including the 1975 NCAA tournament runnerup Iowa State University, will converge on the Theodore R. Gibson Health Center on the South Campus of Miami-Dade Community College next month for the eighth annual Sunshine National Open Wrestling Tournament. The prestigious Sunshine National Open, the second-largest Christmas holiday tournament in the nation, will be held Dec. 27-29. The tournament will once again be sponsored by the United States Wrestling Federation, Florida Division, making the competition the only USWF-sanctioned tournament in South Florida over the festive holiday season. In addition to local entries F.I.U. and Miami-Dade South, the tourney will feature teams such as Ohio State, North Carolina, Missouri, Boston University, Yale University, Richmond, Chicago State, Alleghney (Pa.) College, and Saginaw Valley. Top individual competitors include F.I.U.'s Tom "Willard" Busman, a 118-pound senior co-captain who was red-shirted last season due to an injury suffered in the U.S. - Russian dual series, and Billy Hoke a 142-pound regional Olympic champion.
SM registering sports programs
The City of South Miami recreation department is registering youngsters for participation in two sports programs, basketball and soccer, which begin in December. Both boys and girls can participate in the soccer program, with five age groups for the boys and three for the girls. The age groups range from eight to 16 for boys and from 10 to 16 for the girls. Soccer practice will begin Dec. 13 for boys and girls at South Miami Field, 6701 SW 62nd St., with all home games to be played at South Miami High School Field, 6856 SW 53rd St. Evaluation dates for the basketball programs are set for Dec. 13, 14 and 15, with practices beginning Dec. 16 at South Miami Field and at Lee Park, 6701 SW 58th Pl. There are four age groups in the basketball program, ranging from nine and under to 15 and under.
Junior OB tennis deadline nearing
Entry deadline for the Junior Orange Bowl Tennis Championships, to be held Dec. 20-24 in Coral Gables is Dec. 8. Singles competition in 14 and under and 12 and under divisions for boys and girls will take place at Salvadore Park, University of Miami courts and the Royal Palm Tennis Club, according to Tournament Chairman Tom Barber. Entries can be obtained by writing Junior Orange Bowl Tennis, Salvadore Park, 1120 Andalusia Ave., Coral Gables, 33134. Trophies will be awarded in all events to the winner, runnerup and third-place finisher and the winner of a feed-in consolation. All matches will be best two out of three sets and hard and clay courts will be used.
