Graphics begin at front door

From Page 12 moved to the living room is unique in its absence of conventional living room pieces. In place of the standard sofa and coffee table are Bob's drums and cymbals, occupying a spot in front of his most powerful supergraphic — a pop-art celestial motif radiating from a billowing white cloud. A professional musician, Bob played the drums and vibes on the road for many years before he and Connie were married, and now keeps in practice by playing with a jazz band at Miami-Dade South. "I don't devote too much time to my music anymore," he says, "because I like to spend as much time as possible with my first love — fishing." (He adds that his love may have been slightly tarnished this past weekend when he and three fishing companions spent 27 hours "lost" on the water near Key Largo, before being rescued by the Coast Guard.) The entire 25-foot wall of the living/dining room is covered by a dramatic silver foil wall paper mural of the New York skyline, which may not exactly go hand-in-hand with the "Florida" look, but certainly does much to keep the room light and bright. Bob's graphics, which start at the front doorway, lead the eye from room to room throughout the house. Parallel serpentine stripes of red and yellow wind their way around all the doorways in the breakfast room, hallway, and into the living room, bending around corners and even following the contours of furniture lying in their path. On another wall in the breakfast room is a simple but striking all-yellow graphic, resembling horizontal slices of a huge grapefruit. Ascending the stairs, the stripes — still red and orange — become angular, and cross over one another continually up to the second floor, and all the way down the long upstairs hallway, where they disappear around a bend. Bob says that every two years or so, usually just before the holidays, he completely redesigns most of the graphics in the house, not unlike the housewife who periodically rearranges furniture for a change of scenery. On two perpendicular walls in the front yard Bob has painted a whimsical graphic of large overlapping green circles. Now the Parkers can sit in their breakfast room, contemplating the huge sliced grapefruit, while looking out upon heaping mounds of Florida limes in their front yard. That, he feels, would never have gone over in New Jersey.
