Dear Decorator: We have just moved to this area from New York and have purchased a lovely home here. Everyone tells us we should have a "Florida" look. Just what is the "Florida" look? Mrs. Nina Smith Kendall Welcome Neighbor! You should have what you enjoy and are comfortable living with. As for a "Florida" look, the term is overused, tired and confusing. The original name represented a light, cheerful, casual effect. It's now developed to the point that you shouldn't live here unless your home is yellow, white and lime-green. Nonsense, that's a bore. Let's try and think of the "Florida" look as anything that complements your personality and good taste. Dear Decorator: We are just about to carpet our three-bedroom house. My husband would like to use similar colors throughout. I say use different colors in each room. What do you recommend? Mrs. Barbara Hurst Coral Gables Dear Colorful: I hate to be a referree, but your husband wins. Nothing is busier and more tiring than a green living room, red bedroom, brown guest room and so on. I suggest you carefully select a base color and work with that in its various complementary tones and values, and use different textures and combinations to create a fluid overall effect and interest. Dear Decorator: I hope you don't think this is a strange question. What's the best way to find and select a decorator? Mrs. B. Kaplan Perrine Dear Cautious: Your question is definitely not strange. On the contrary, it's intelligent, important and valid. Most interior designers do little or no advertising because of the intangible aspect of our service, so other means of contact must be investigated. "A satisfied customer is your best advertisement," "a picture is worth a thousand words," and similar old adages are pertinent to your question. Ask some friends if they know a decorator they would recommend. Some of your satisfied neighbors or relatives would be happy to introduce you to their decorators. If you're stuck, you can call the Designers and Decorators Guild of Miami, a local organization of the trade. They will be happy to recommend a qualified designer. As for selecting, that's very personal. Arrange a meeting and let the designer know exactly what your needs are. Ask to see some pictures of his work or to actually see some of his jobs, and what they would suggest for you. Then decide. Select someone you have confidence in and with whom you'd enjoy working. Now enjoy that satisfaction and pleasure of a rewarding relationship and a beautiful home.
