Serious problem / Student arrested for jaywalking

A Coral Gables High School student was arrested Thursday for obstruction of a police officer and jay walking. The 15-year-old girl was taken to the Coral Gables Police Station and released to her parents shortly after the incident. A hearing in juvenile court will be set to determine the outcome. According to Gables Police, Officer Underwood advised the juvenile not to jay walk across LeJeune Road at the Bird Road intersection. The student had some verbal exchange with Underwood, said Police. "The girl became enraged and started scratching the officers face," said Dennis Koronkowicz, Gables public information officer. During the argument a crowd of students gathered at the scene, but they were quickly dispersed, police said. "The problem of jay walking at that intersection is becoming more and more serious," said Koronkowicz. "Somebody is going to get killed on LeJeune Road if this continues." Coral Gables Police have continuously warned students against the dangers of jay walking at one of the Gables' busiest intersections. "We are hoping for cooperation from the student population. We have tried to issue as stern a warning as we can to the student body, but many of those students just keep doing it," he added. "All they have to do is walk about 40 feet, push the button at the light and cross the street," said Koronkowicz. "Those kids must be aware of the dangers of jay walking."

In times of emergency, all city functions will operate from center

From Page 1 the radio equipment installed this week makes it possible to communicate with people all over the world. In addition, just by picking up the hotline in Porterfield's office, he can contact all other emergency centers in Dade County, the State of Florida and the United States. To keep tabs on any possible problems, the center also records information dispatched from other local emergency systems on a daily basis. The center is designed to house 79 people—including the mayor and four commissioners, department heads, a physician and other employes—for a period of at least two weeks. In case of an emergency, they would be able to conduct all of the city's operations from the center on a 24-hour basis. In addition to the Florida Power & Light main line and the company's secondary system, the center has its own 8,000 amp generator and 6,000 gallons of fuel underground. The emergency radio operations includes a medical main and emergency radio which would be operated by the Fire Department and is hooked up to Doctor's Hospital. There is also the fire main and emergency radio, local government main and emergency radio and the police inter-city radio hooked up to all other law enforcement agencies in Dade County.
