Jaguar tennis coach pleased with squad
When Julie Cohen led his 1977 Miami-Dade Community College South tennis team into their spring schedule Friday, Feb. 4, in a quadrangular tournament at Moore Park, he wasn't concerned with team inexperience or a lack of talent on his squad. In fact, he may have been watching five of the top six performers from his 1976 team, which finished fourth nationally. when the tourney got underway with Miami-Dade North, Miami-Dade New World Center, and Florida Atlantic University. "We're a lot stronger this season than last," says Cohen, "and the competition for the top six singles slots is wide open. Even Steve Rogul will have to play up to his capabilities in order to remain at singles." Rogul, the 1976 state junior college singles champion who narrowly missed winning the national title last May in dropping the third set of his match for the title by virtue of a 5-2 tiebreaker, joins four of his teammates in returning to attempt to bring Miami-Dade South its first national title ever. Hans Muench, who teamed with Rogul to win the state doubles championship, is currently battling four sophomores and two freshmen for the singles position. Muench and Rogul also finished a respectable seventh in national doubles play, good enough for All-American recognition by the NJCAA. Diego Valencia also returns to challenge for the spot. Valencia was a state doubles and singles runner-up, and also competed in the national competition. Other sophs who will be gunning for the second position are: Lewis Vallejo, a transfer from St. John's University and Metropolitan New York's collegiate singles champion as a freshman; Ford Oliver, Ruben Zarate, and Bob Neinken, a Miami Beach High grad. The two freshmen who will be challenging for the spot and places in the top six singles positions are Sergio Campos and Peter Knispel. "This may sound like an old NFL cliche, but every one of these guys is capable of beating any other on any given day," Cohen notes. Cohen admits his toughest task will be trying to put together doubles teams, as the players are so close in talent. "Singles position can be more easily resolved by direct challenge," says Cohen. The Miami-Dade South tennis program, on the rise since the former University of Miami basketball star took over four years ago, is now attracting talent from all corners of the western hemisphere, including three players from Canada, two from Mexico, one from Colombia, one from Bolivia, and five from the United States. "I guess the success we've had has bred success in our recruiting," says Cohen. "The Miami-Dade South name in tennis is being ... passed by word-of-mouth among junior players on the Canadian circuit and in some of the other countries, and we've even started getting inquiries from places like New Zealand, Australia and Europe."
