Buildings will be destroyed to make way for passive park

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer Four small residential office buildings bought in 1975 by the City of South Miami are going to be demolished to make way for a passive park. Or, the four structures, in the 7200 block of SW 61st Court, may be set on fire and put out by Metro firefighting recruits as a means of getting rid of the buildings. "We offered to give the buildings to HUD or Boys Town in West Dade," explained City Manager Jack Present, "but they didn't want the cost of hauling them away." The city manager also called for bids for the buildings to be hauled away. "But all we received were bids for demolitions. We won't pay to have them demolished. The city can do it," said Present. The city manager said that the Metro Fire Department is always looking for buildings it can use in training firefighting recruits. The destruction of the buildings, by whatever means, will coincide with the groundbreaking, probably next month, of the new Metro branch library to the east of South Miami city hall. "When the library comes, we'll have a complete reassessment of the parking situation around city hall and make plans for parking for the library as well as city hall," said Present. Plans call for the county to completely redesign the present city hall parking lot with planters at either end and lighting in the middle. In the redesign, the city will lose eight of the parking spaces presently in use in the lot. But the city manager said that he may have to reassign city hall parking, especially for city hall employes, and make plans for combining city hall and library parking. "We're also considering putting parking meters in the public lots around city hall," Present pointed out, "as a means of preventing commuters from parking here during the day and taking a bus to Miami." The city manager said that a survey is being conducted now to determine how many cars are left all day in the city hall and the present library parking lots. Even if there is a need, the city manager said, present plans do not call for the site of the four residential office buildings to be used for off-street parking. "When the buildings are demolished, or burned away, we plan that site for a passive park, with trees and benches, the city manager said. The lots are directly west of city hall, and were bought by the city for $206,500 in August 1975, as a means of preventing anyone else from using the site for a multi-level office building. The city reasoned at the time of purchase that if the property was bought by someone else, the future use could be detrimental to the ingress and egress of Metro's fire and rescue vehicles at the fire station in the city hall.

South Miami may start clearing messy lots

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer In an effort to rid the City of South Miami of overgrown lots, the city has decided to go into the lot clearing business itself, if a property owner doesn't clear his own lot. The city council at its 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, meeting will consider the final reading of an ordinance granting the city manager the powers to clear the overgrown lots and send the owner a bill for $50. If the owner doesn't pay, the city, under the ordinance, can and will put a special assessment lien on the property at a six percent interest rate. Since the city already has an ordinance holding a property owner responsible for keeping his lot from becoming overgrown, the proposed ordinance would ensure the clearing of the lot whether the owner does it or not.
