Royal Bahamas Police Force Band to perform at City Hall lawn

A special appearance by the Royal Bahamian Police Band will highlight grand open-ing ceremonies. A "Noontime Concert at City Hall," featuring the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band, in its first-ever appearance in Coral Gables, will be held on the lawn in front of Coral Gables City Hall on Fri-day, Feb. 18. The event, sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Com-mittee of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Ba-hamas Tourist Office in Coral Gables, will begin promptly at noon, when the marching band will parade down Miracle Mile, starting at Merrick Way, to the concert site at City Hall. In a brief ceremony be-fore the music begins, Coral Gables Mayor Rob-ert B. Knight will give a special greeting to the top Bahamian officials ex-pected to be in atten-dance. Introducing the band and the dignitaries will be Cultural Affairs Committee Chairman Do-lores Eldredge. Following the concert of a variety of Goombay, marching, popular and is-land musical selections, the Royal Bahamas Police Band will march back down Miracle Mile to Merrick Way. The public is invited to attend the event, the first activity of the newly-formed Cultural Affairs Committee of the Coral Gables Chamber of Com-merce.

Organization will resurrect word 'fun' for older crowd

By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer After watching their mother and her friends spend another New Year's Eve at home, Jill Klaskin and Wendy Inter-land decided to take mat-ters into their own hands. There is no reason why people 50 and over can't have a good time in South Dade, the two Kendale residents said. So they pushed full speed ahead and formed Bio, an organization they claim will resurrect the world fun for the older crowd. The only requirement to join the non-profit orga-nization based at 14201 N. Kendall Dr., is that you be 50 or over. Wendy, 35, and Jill, 32, don't qualify for member-ship, but the sisters will take care of organizing the planned activities of the group. "There are a lot of peo-ple who are beyond the bar scene and the hard sell clubs with the high cost of membership," said Jill. "Those are the ones we are appealing to," she said. Their mother, Harriet Platnick Interland, the main reason Bio was formed, will also be con-tributing her ideas to the organization. Harriet was the first professional woman pho-tographer in New York and also worked for the Grossinger Hotel in in up-state New York as con-vention manager before moving to South Dade. To insure a balance group, the two young women have devised a method they call "By In-vitation Only." "Nothing will be left to chance. We'll know who is coming to a function, they have expressed a de-sire to attend and they have requested an invita-tion," said Wendy. The main idea is to pro-vide a relaxed social at-mosphere where people of the same age and with similar interests can meet. To test their market several months ago, Jill and Wendy placed a clas-sified ad under the per-sonal column in The Miami Herald. The ad was for a male compan-ion 50 or over for a woman of the same age, and they received more than 150 replies. "We know that there are many people out there who would like to meet others their same age - but have no way to doing so," said Wendy, who ran a public relations and photography firm in New York prior to moving to Miami. Membership fee will be minimal and the money will be used to cover the cost of mailings and re-freshments at the gather-ings. "The business commu-nity has been a great help in sponsoring some of our activities such as movie premiers, brunch-es, guest speakers and door prizes," said Jill, an accomplished artist and sportswear designer. The first Bio gathering will be held at Lakepoint West Apartments on Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. Herb An-nabelle Aaronson of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association will provide the enterta nment with a game show and skits. On March 10 at 8 p.m. the group will listen to Dr. E.F. Grossy, president of the American Hypno-sis Association, speak about habit control and behavior by hypnosis. On March 22 at 8:30 p.m. the Mini Magicians, a group who has per-formed for the Rhodes Brothers, will entertain. Anyone interested in at-tending any or all of the events can call any eve-ning to request an invita-tion. Jill is at 595-7544 and Wendy at 274-0985.
