Celebration mission to be space-age
The Mercury Ball, the annual anniversary celebration of the founding of South Miami Hospital will have a space-age mission and a New Orleans theme this year. The Associates, an active 50-man volunteer force drawn from business and civic circles along Dixie Highway, will present as the theme, "No. 11 Bourbon Street." In the last decade more than $63 thousand has been raised for various equipment needs to benefit South Dade area patients. This year a Vanguard Projector, similar to those used in manned space shots, has been selected. It will be utilized in the new Cardiovascular Lab where patients with serious heart defects are diagnosed prior to open-heart surgery. General Chairman David L. Stinnett has announced the event will be held Saturday evening, Feb. 26, at the Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club and will coincide with the 17th anniversary of the Hospital. Tax deductible tickets will cost $100 per couple for a Patron and $500 per table for a Sponsor. For further information, phone 661-4611, Extension 3805, and ask for Development. David L. Shipwreck party for maties
Avast, ye maties! The University of Miami Women's Club will have a "Shipwreck Party" on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Faculty Club. Cost of dinner and dancing is $8.95. There will be a cash bar. Send reservation requests to Mrs. B.B. Walters, 1520 Miller Road.
Bonsai meeting
The Bonsai Club of Miami will meet Monday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the University Christian Church, 6750 Sunset Dr. The topic will be Saikei, the process of landscape setting. Plants will be for sale and a raffle will be held.
Wayward girls
Do you know of a young girl who is homeless and wondered what you could do about it? The Coral Gables Woman's Club is doing something about these girls. A fundraising luncheon and card party will be held Feb. 16 from noon to 4 p.m. at the clubhouse at 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. For reservations, call Mrs. Claire Whitehurst, 445-2128.
Vespers Musicale
A Vespers Musicale, will be presented by The Miami Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and Miami Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, National Music Honorary for Women, Sunday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 3360 W. Flagler St.
Homemakers meeting
The South Miami Extension Homemakers will meet Monday, Feb. 14 at 9:30 a.m. at 6700 SW 38th St. A program will be presented by Pilar Fox. Members are asked to bring things for the white-elephant table and any new craft ideas they would like to share.
Square dance
A square dance sponsored by the Coral Gables Chapter of Association of Children with Learning Disabilities will be held Saturday, Feb. 26 from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Flamingo Ballroom of the University of Miami Student Union. This is the chapter's main fund-raising event of the year to bring aid to children with reading or related learning disabilities. Refreshments will be available. For tickets, call 261-5388 or 661-2953. The donation is $2.50 per person and everyone is invited, both adults and children.
