Up, up and over

Being a pole vaulter isn't all fun and games. Hard work and determination came into play. So on a wet, dreary afternoon some Coral Gables High students got out to practice the art of sailing over a bar, suspended in midair. Rick Waugh, a Gables sophmore, starts his stretch over the bar. High school roundup Gables swimmers shine against Tides

The Coral Gables boys' and girls' swimming teams remained undefeated as they both downed Southridge and Miami High. Three-time winners Kim Carroll and Jennifer Dawson led the Cavaliers in the meet. Susan Arnold was a double winner for the victors. Gables beat Southridge, 52-20, and Miami High, 62-2. The girls are now 3-0. The boys' team was led by Carl Maier and Michael Crow, who won three events each, and Craig Maier, who won two events. Gables whipped Miami High, 64-11, and Southridge, 54-22. They also are 3-0.

Pro gridders to play in tourney

The Third Annual Boy Scouts of America Golf Tournament, honoring Johnny Bench, will be held Friday, Feb. 25 at Calusa Country Club, 9400 SW 130th Ave. There will be 120 players in the "Scramble" and over 20 prizes. Art Bruns, a director of South Florida Scouting and founder of the tournament, said a partial list of celebrities who will play include pro football players, Bert Jones and Jake Scott. Bruns said the tax deductible entrance fee remains at $100, which includes golf cart, cocktails and buffet. George Kunde, a tournament director, said that the event has raised $10,000 each year for the Boy Scouts.

SPORTS More Swimming

South Miami's Henry and James Woodman are not only brothers but were also double winners in South Miami's 96-47 victory over the South Dade Rebels. James won the 100 and 50 freestroke and brother Henry took the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. South Miami is 2-0.

Tennis

Cathy Stawarsky of Southwest defeated Clara Pirez of Hialeah, 6-4, 6-0, in No. 1 Singles, as the Eagles went on to down Hialeah, 5-2. Southwest is 2-4.

Basketball

The Killian girls captured the Southern Division championship with a 64-37 beating of Miami High. Susan Dodgen led the Cougars with 17 points. Shanda Tribble had 10. Killian ended the season 13-1. Palmetto's Nancy Cohen led all scorers with 22 points, as the Panthers downed Coral Gables, 63-54. Sandra Wells had 19 points for the losers.

Golf

John Pallot continued his winning ways for Coral Gables, as the Cavaliers beat Palmetto, 4-1, at the Biltmore Golf Course. Pallot, who has been a medalist in all of the Cavalier matches, won another medal with a three-under-par 32. Gables is 3-1; Palmetto is 2-1. Steve Volovar was a medalist for South Miami as his team beat Colombus in sudden death, 3-2. Volovar shot a two-over-par 38. South Miami raised its record to 3-1, while Columbus dropped to 0-3.

Soccer

Coral Gables ended its season on a winning note by beating Killian 1-0 in overtime. A goal by Howard Senior on a corner kick by Mike Stephenson proved the margin of victory. Cavalier goalie, Joe Ortega, worked his eighth shutout. Gables ended the season 7-1-3. Goals by Ricky Vaughan and Charles Topper pushed Palmetto over Coral Park, 2-1. Palmetto is 10-5-1; Coral Park is 5-5-2.
