Don't Miss It!

One week from tonight the members of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce will gather around the festive board to look back on the accomplishments of the past year, to meet the newly elected officers and to hear plans for future projects. When President Charles B. Tutan gives his resume of the Chamber's accomplishments during the past 12 months, the membership will have every right to swell with pride. Those accomplishments have been many. The men and women who have served on the various projects committees during the year have done an excellent job. Coral Gables has progressed and benefitted by their actions. The Chamber also achieved a coup in securing the services of John Temple Graves as the guest speaker. As a newspaperman and a lecturer Mr. Graves has a knowledge of the problems of the South that has held many an audience spellbound. Those who have heard him once, flock to hear him again. The whole enjoyable evening will be climaxed by dancing in the moonlit patio of the Country Club of Coral Gables—a chance to renew old friendships, make new ones and chat informally about this town of ours. This annual meeting is one thing you will not want to miss. Make your reservation today and be assured of a wonderful time and a memorable evening.

No Security

Do you feel secure within the confines of your home? Well, it's time to face the facts. You are not secure. Not as long as cancer, the scourge of mankind is stalking the country. It reaches its killing hand into thousands of homes annually, taking the lives of mothers, fathers, and yes, even little children. More children between the ages of five and 20 die of cancer every year than die of diphtheria, infantile paralysis, scarlet fever and whooping cough combined. Your contribution is needed for the fight against cancer. Mail your check to American Cancer Society, 936 Ingraham building.

IN OUR MAIL

Editor, The Riviera-Times: We are constant readers and am quite disgusted with the Snap Talk interviews on the front page. I happen to be in business in this section, 4260 SW 8th Street, and certainly cannot see how strangers would know anything about our problems. In the first place I would like to meet the first person in this section who would be like to be taken into Coral Gables. We are satisfied and will fight for what we have. Violet Adams (Reader Adams has a perfect right to her opinion but should be informed that the idea for incorporating her area into the city limits of Coral Gables came from residents of that section. No Coral Gables group has instigated the plan nor invited the "No Man's Landers" to come into the community.)

OUR TOWN Witch Hunting —By Jim Moore—

Jim Moore It's unfortunate that when a group of people get together to try to discuss something intelligently, there are always those among them who must resort to the old Salem practice of witch-hunting to win their side of the argument. Such was the case on Monday and Tuesday nights when the residents of "No Man's Land" gathered in city hall to discuss whether or not they wanted to petition to become a part of Coral Gables. Some ugly things were said and some nasty implications were made, all of which were without the slightest vestige of foundation. Bracey Richardson, who acted as spokesman for the minority group in favor of annexation, was accused as being a hireling and a tool of the Coral Gables commission. The city fathers were accused of being the founders of a deep and mysterious plot to annex the territory, which some of the residents there seem to think is a rich plum that would swell Gables coffers. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In the first place, the greater part of the territory is undesirable and I doubt whether the citizens of Coral Gables would ever vote to take it into the city limits. A large part of the land contains juke joints, a trailer park, a cemetery and below standard houses. Several of the "hot heads" who were so outspoken at the meetings demanded, "What is Coral Gables going to offer us to come into the city limits?" Actually the question should be reversed. What do they have to offer in return for the honor of being a part of Coral Gables? As to the so-called "base motives" of Mr. Richardson and his neighbors; the accusation is ridiculous. Bracey Richardson is a responsible citizen. During the war he served as a lieutenant commander in Naval Intelligence and is still active in the intelligence reserve. He is a partner in the Hill Company of Florida. His reputation would probably stand the test far better than that of some of his accusers. He and his neighbors who appeared before the commission several weeks ago were prompted by sincere motives which they thought would improve the area in which they live. So let's keep the record straight. Coral Gables does not have, nor never did have a desire to take in all or any part of No Man's Land. Coral Gables is not crowded and has plenty of land for future building. It does not need extra territory. Any move to annex additional territory would call for two separate referendums, one in Coral Gables and one in the territory in question. So acquisition against the wishes of any group would be impossible. The city commission was merely courteous enough to give audience to the plea of a group of residents in that area. Those few who launched their witch hunt succeeded only in making themselves ridiculous. President Truman's word that wage raises are justified if prices don't go down certainly got action. In fact labor got a raise right away—out of management. High capitol Democrats say that Henry Wallace is speaking in Europe as a private citizen. He may be a citizen, but he's sure not private. A Newark, N.J., firm is offering a $3350 brush. If your regular shave doesn't make you blue in the face, try that One thing a lot of home-hunting families have to be thankful for this year—no spring housecleanig.

It Says Here...

For a long time we've been reading in the various papers about mental cruelty and somehow we could never get a very clear picture in our mind what it was all about. It seems to be used frequently in Hollywood as an excuse for matrimonial fission but the details are always vague. This week however, we got a very good example of it from Lucy Rutger, who with her husband Don, were recent week-end guests of the Bob Longs. It seems that several years ago the Rutgers had a house near the Clyde Beatty farm at Fort Lauderdale. One morning Lucy arose and looked out the window and saw five elephants, trunk to tail in the traditional manner, slowly marching by the house. "Don!" she cried, "Come quick and see the elephants!" Friend husband arose, strode to the window, gazed out on the pachyderm parade for a moment and then turned to his wife with a perfectly straight face and said, "What elephants?" To this day, he has refused to admit that he saw any elephants and further contends that no such animals were quartered at the Clyde Beatty farm. "And they were ordinary grey elephants, not pink ones," Lucy wails miserably. The difficulty of obtaining certain hard-to-get items, a favorite topic, was being engaged in by a group at a recent Gables gathering. "I had a heck of a time getting shipment on a birthday present I ordered for my wife," Leon LaSalle, the cleaning establishment operator, opined. "And what were you getting her?" asked the other guests. "Oh, a new shirt pressing machine," sez Leon—with a sly twinkle, of course. John Monroe, one of the participants from Ponce in the current music festival, was a soloist at the Lion's Club meeting on Wednesday. When he had finished a very difficult number on his cornet and the applause had died down, Willard Hubbell arose and stated, "I live next door to John, and I have followed his progress on the cornet from the time he blew the first note. I must say that I was amply repaid by his performance here this afternoon." Freddie Diestlehorst, who was a familiar figure around the First National Bank as an assistant vice president, has connected himself with S. Duffield Hopkins in the investment business in the Douglas Entrance. Good luck on the new venture, Freddie... Hathaway Rinehart was in to see us this week to defend the Community Chest in its recent action concerning the Youth Center.
