ADDITIONS BOLSTER FIRE ALARM NET Twenty-one Boxes Added; Total Is 101

Twenty-one new fire alarm boxes have been purchased by the Coral Gables Fire Department this year, bringing the total number of boxes in the city to 101, according to F. J. Neff, who is in charge of the fire alarm system. "The fire alarm box is the quickest and most direct way to turn in an alarm," pointed out Neff. "When an alarm is phoned in, the person calling is usually excited and makes many mistakes which using the box prevents." Give Right Address If an alarm is phoned in, care should be taken to give the correct address. Many people forget to give any address at all. Often people in their excitement to report a fire, will call the wrong station. Last week the Gables station received calls for fires in Miami and on Miami Beach. Learn Location Every Gableite should know the location of the alarm box closest to his house, and should know how to operate this box properly. The operation of one of these alarm boxes is a simple process, - all you have to do is pull the handle on the door down, and then pull the hook inside. After this has been done, do not rush back to the fire, but wait at the box until the engine arrives. In case of a fire inside a building this is the only way the fireman have of knowing the location of the blaze. "These boxes are tested every week to make certain they are in perfect condition", stated Neff. "In addition to the 21 new alarm boxes we have received this year, we still need about 200 more."

HELD TO SEEK NATIONAL TITLE Bridge Champ Claims No Special System But Cups and Titles Keep Rolling In

Although he uses no special system i' bridge games, innumerable trophies, cups, plaques and even the Florida Open Pairs Tournament have been won by Lawrence Held, Coral Gables resident for the past ten years. No high scoring bridge player follows a particular system, because each tournament requires a different way to play, according to Held, who is a contender for the National Championships Open Pairs title. These tournament games will be held at the St. George Hotel in Brooklyn, N. Y., August 2 through August 10th. Totaled 573 Points Two weeks ago Held entered the Southeastern Open Pairs Tournament at the Hollywood Beach Hotel, and he and his partner, Eddie Cohen of Miami Beach, copped the runner-up position with 573 points. This score was five points less than the 578 total that William Seaman and Waldemar On Zedwitz, the winners, made. Entire proceeds, consisting of $1,000 from the Florida unit of the American Contract Bridge League, which sponsored the tournament, is being sent to the survivors of the Texas City, Texas disaster. Win Three Times Held was a winner of the Southeastern Open Pairs Tournament three times, and although he did not take the first position, he did very well. His trophies are a good record for any bridge player. And speaking of his trophies, none of them have remained in his possession. "I give them all away, Held said. What good are they once you win them?" It's the enjoyment he gets that really counts! Held, who is an accountant for the Huskamp Motor Co., has been playing cards all his life. In fact, he says, "I enjoy all kinds of card games and bridge was just another game that I wanted to learn how to play." He agrees, however, that bridge has become his hobby. A "native son" of California, Held still believes that California is the "best state in the Union." It seems he rambled around the country for a whole, and finally ended up in Coral Gables.

Knowing the show would last two hours the student deposited one nickle in the parking meter, placed another one on the ledge over the dashboard and displayed the following note under the windshield wiper: "Officer; If meter is overdue please deposit 5c which you will find on inside ledge of car. Thanks-" When the student came out of the movies two hours later he found he had about two minutes left on the meter, and the following answer to his note: "Dear Friend, O.K. this time but we only allow one hour parking in any city block.
