Pre-cast Concrete Business Founded By R. Fulton Webb
Another Gables resident, R. Fulton Webb, 3825 Toledo Drive, has added his name to the list of Coral Gables manufacturers. Webb is making pre-cast concrete joists and slabs as well as other concrete products. The advantages of concrete joists and slabs are many in this climate, Webb points out, stating that the prime factor is that they are fireproof, greatly reducing the insurance rate. These materials which are termite-proof are designed to last forever. Gets Contract Webb has a contract now for 21⁄2 miles of pre-cast curbing for Crandon Park. The curbing is being manufactured at the plant at 4005 Aurora Street. Small homes as well as large buildings are using these joists and slabs, he said. They have recently been used in the construction of the roof and floors of the R. F. Webb building, Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Bird Road, which is being leased to the Whidden Motor Sales, Inc. A Gables resident for 23 years, and contractor since 1922, Webb began the R. F. Webb Concrete Products here in July, 1945.

Steeple Jacking for Thrills
After deciding that "life is too dull", James Kelly, 21 year old Navy veteran, is giving up routine affairs for the more interesting life of a steeplejack. Inspired by climbing trees 400-feet tall in the Washington forest area, Kelly decided he liked that "up in the clouds" feeling. Noticing there are no registered steeplejacks in Miami or Coral Gables, he is going to try that vocation for awhile in hopes of finding some excitement. Started in 1945 Kelly's interest in "getting away from it all" (by climbing tall trees!) began in December, 1945 when he was on leave in Washington. At that time he was at a lumber camp and saw some men climbing trees several hundred feet high in order to cut off the branches and tops. It looked exciting to Kelly and he decided to give it a try. Now looking for someone who needs high work done, he says he'll tackle anything—flagpoles, radio towers, trees, etc. Working with him in his latest venture are his brother, Bob, and D. J. Southwick. From New Jersey Hailing from Harrison, N.J., Kelly spent 21⁄2 years in the Navy, a large portion of which he served in the South Pacific. After his discharge in 1946, he drove an ambulance for awhile in his quest for excitement. He came to Coral Gables last January and is staying at the Ponce de Leon Hotel.

Cushman's Opens Saturday
A constantly replenished supply of fresh bakery goods will be the order every day after Cushman's Bakery opens tomorrow at 2152 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Featuring the most recent conveniences of the bakery world, Cushman's has an insulated truck which will bring hot donuts, rolls, Vienna breads, and other baked goods to the store from their central bakery located at 1310 W. Flagler Street. This special delivery of "warm" goods will occur once a day, at 4:30. However, there will be regular deliveries all day long, which will serve to insure freshness of goods regardless of the hour the customers choose to do their shopping. As a protection against the hot weather, Cushman's have installed a new refrigeration case in which to keep all of their whipped cream goods. Besides handling all of the regular "goodies" to be found in the neighborhood pastry shop, this new store will feature a special department to take care of special orders for weddings, parties, or other festive occasions.
Dutch Orphan Adopted by University Group
A four-year-old Dutch boy with the traditional blond hair and blue eyes of the windmill country has been adopted by the Pan Hellenic Council of the University of Miami, under the Foster Parents' Plan. More than 48,000 children of all nationalities have been helped by this organization since its inception ten years ago. Although the boy is now in Holland, living with his grandparents, his Foster parents contribute monthly for the childs support. Four-year-old Eeltje Romkema was left an orphan by the Japanese invasion in 1942. His father was captured by invaders and hasn't been heard from since. Shortly after his father's seizure, Eeltje, his two older sisters and his mother were put in a concentration camp, where the mother died in 1944. Returned to Holland Some months ago the three children were returned to Holland and are now living with their grandparents who are desperately in need of financial aid in order to maintain a home for the children. The family is now being aided by monthly contributions from Eeltje's foster parents here at the University of Miami. Under the foster parent's plan, on receipt of application to adopt a stranded orphan the foster parent receives a photograph and a brief history of the child. Other foster parents in the country include many outstanding personalities, among them: Mrs. James Couzens, Mr. John Haynes Holmes, Tallulah Bankhead, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Fred Allen, Jack Benny, Mark Van Doren, Hildegarde, Ella Fitzgerald and Kay Kyser. Headquarters for the Foster Parents' Plan for War Children are at 55 West 42nd street in New York City, N.Y.

Prove Mettle As Diplomats
The old story of averting of an international incident got a rehashing recently in Coral Gables, after Gables police had done just that. Police Officer Moss got the first tip-off at picture show closing time when a gentleman stepped into the station with the report that his car had been tampered with in his absence at the movies. He had left it unlocked outside, headed west, and had returned to find it facing east with its aerial up as though it had been used. Investigation showed that neither damage nor robbery had affected the vehicle, but Officer Moss finding that the gentleman was Dr. J. M. Renedo, Consul General de Nicaragua, informed the doctor that in the future any time that he wished to visit a Gables theater, he could park his car in the police lot. Dr. Renedo, immensely gratified by the gentlemanly conduct of Gables police, was so pleased at the courtesy that he went out and brought in his wife to introduce her to officer Moss and Sgt. Bell.
