Glade Experiences Are Related By Homer Rhode

The Coral Gables Breakfast Club had as its guest speaker yesterday Homer Rhode, Jr., of 1212 Obispo, who spoke at the weekly meeting at the Sevilla Restaurant. Rhode was for a number of years game warden in the Everglades, and told of living in the glades for as much as 107 days at one stretch. Besides enforcing the game laws, he was engaged in trapping deer, quail and turkey in areas where they were plentiful and transporting them to stock depleted sections. He told of one of the local characters, "Old Man Richardson," who was paid an irregular $2 a week as watchman at the original Tamiami oil well, and used to get full of indigo and king snakes. On cold nights they would all climb under the blankets with him, and before he could get up in the morning he would have to disentangle the fifteen or twenty odd snakes which were wrapped about his torso.
