Gables, Grove Scenes Star in Art Show To Be Presented by University Students
University of Miami's School of Art will exhibit etchings, water colors, drawings, and oil paintings in Art Center Galleries, Miami Beach, beginning May 26. By far the largest exhibit held by the University, the prints of many veterans vie for top honors this year. Returning from the service forces, all have shown a keen sense of visual appreciation according to instructors. Field trips to nearby points of picturesque contrast taken each week, created studies of Coconut Grove waterfront, Coral Gables area, Miami river with its fishermen and small boats, Bahama types drawn in the colored seetion of South Miami, and numerous shades of imaginative creations. The technique of printmaking will be exhibited in finished prints. Involving woodcuts, lithographs, serigraphs, and other media, this phase seems to be one of the most successful of all the courses. Merrick Sponsors Exhibit Richard Merrick, brother of George Merrick, founder of Coral Gables and the University of Miami, will present the work of students in etching and watercolors. For over ten years Professor Merrick has been associated with the art school at the University. Nationally known as an etcher and a painter, he represented the State of Florida at the Museum of Modern Art with his work "New Horizons in American Art" and has been honored by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, galleries in Washington, D. C., and the Grand Central Galleries of New York City. Last year Professor Merrick's etching "Pilgrim's Rest" was selected from the Society of American Etchers exhibition in the National Academy as one of the prints of the year to go on special showing. This year his work was shown in the International Exhibition at Seattle's Museum of Art. His "House of Refuge" and "Quiet Backwater" were purchased for the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. Oils to Be Shown Oil paintings will be arranged by Denman Fink, professor in charge of the treatment of color relations, handling of paints, theory and practice, and the correlation of good drawing with painter vision. According to Professor Fink, there is a surprising number of outstanding students this year. "University art courses provide for knowledge with technical skill as a foundation for whatever creative power the student may be able to develop," said Richard Merrick. "Never-ending picturesqueness of South Florida blending with the modern unfolds new beauty constantly for the brush of the artist. Possibility of Coral Gables and Miami becoming future art centers is fast becoming a reality." Among the students exhibiting in the life class are: Rita Weiss, who studied at the Art Students League, New York; Suzanne Levenson, who studied at Museum of Art, Rochester; Rebecca Goldstein; and former Army nurse, Ruth R. Haith. Various media are represented by the outstanding work of Andrews Dimos, James Moffett, Paula Fadem, Peggy Warner, James Lackey, and Ludwig Guerico. Mrs. Jane Troetschel, assistant instructor, will exhibit watercolors of her own creation.
