PONCE NOTES AND NEWS Outstanding Students Win Scholastic, Activity Awards
By BETTY NEWMAN Climaxing the year's assembly schedule were the two annual award presentations in the gym. One was last week and the other took place this morning. Ann Meyer and Larry Kilbride received citizenship awards given to the outstanding freshmen from the Coral Gables American Legion Post 98. Betty Lou Martin won the essay contest sponsored by the Auxiliary Unit of Post 98, while Earle Peeples and Mary Pierce took honors in Auxiliary Unit 70's essay contest. Post 70 awarded its Declamation Cup to Darryl McCall, while Bob Hiss and Nettie Iijort won the Auxiliary Unit's Poppy poster contest. Nettie's poster also took second prize in the state contest. Leston May won the coveted Bausch Lomb Science Award. Pratt Hospital gave the band an award for services to the veterans. Two athletic trophies, from the Coral Gables and Miami Junior Chambers of Commerce were presented to Bill Stephens and Dave McDonald. Jerre Brigham Honored Annually given to an outstanding senior girl, this year's Coral Gables Women's Award went to Jerre Brigham. Florence Fulford won the Coral Gables Business and Professional Women's Club trophy. Ann Summes received the DAR Homemaker's award, Jeanne Lamper received the American History Award, and Harriet Quillian the Citizen Pilgrimage award. Sigma Chi presented its citizenship trophy, a huge golden beauty, to Earle Peeples amongst the loudest applause of the assembly. The audience defiantly proved that they thought the "biggest trophy went to the biggest boy." The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Gentlemen's trophy was presented to Dave McDonald. Plan "Cornival" Plenty of corn will spark this year's twenty-act musical which now bears the explanatory title of "Cornival." This grand affair is in the final throes of rehearsal these days, for next week marks the opening of this show. May 22 and 23 are the dates to see this performance and tickets can be purchased from any Wheel, Key or Cavallette Club member. If you refuse to buy a ticket expect to be furthermore banned from polite society for this event is a "must" on the social calendar at Ponce. To match the decorative plans made for the Senior Banquet next in the 9A June class Tuesday, the class of '47 has chosen gold and brown for their class colors. Ready for Class Day Class Day plans are completed, and except for the fact that everything is running smoothly. The gals have their dresses, hats and hair-does all planned and the boys know with whom they are walking. Rehearsals yesterday were smooth, the class will prophesy history, and such things are all ready for final performance. Last Friday was work day for Seniors. They will each contribute two dollars to the class gift. Part of this will go for the class gift, of which Earle Peeples is in charge. Hi-Ys Choose Sweetheart Amid laughter of Ponceites, shuffling feet and general night life excitement, Joan Wooten, Ponce sophomore, was chosen sweetheart of the Hi-Y boys and the shining crown was placed on her glossy curls at the big Hi-Y dance May 2. The identity of the sweetheart was kept a complete secret from all until the time of the crowning. Ray Williams, Hi-Y president, who crowned the sweetheart, and Jeanlousette Smith, who didn't know she was the winner until five minutes before the ceremony. There was gay music and tasty refreshments, some of which could be seen the "morning after." Play's The Thing What next? Now the illustrious and well-favored Ponce alumni have created a stage sensation that threatens to the stage of Coral Gables Elementary School last Saturday night and was heralded by loud thumps, murders, explosions and like evidences of wit and humor. Did you know that "Fourteen Makes a Dozen?" Well, according to Playwrights David DeNoon and Lynton Tyler, it's a fact. For those unfortunate souls who missed last week's performance, a repeat will be given at the same time and place tomorrow night. Vote For Royal Pair Bring your pennies and cast your votes for the King and Queen of the Junior Prom! Little pieces of copper fly from hand to hand these days constituting bartering power for choosing the monarchs to rule this affair. The final voting will be secret and the results made known "on the stroke of midnight," the night of the prom. Powderpuff Kick-Off With such gridiron' stars as Anyfaee Parker, Swivel Hips Grafton, Influence Hardin, Bitsy Bowyer and Forever Einfeldt, the Red Wrecks met the Husky Hags on the field of battle yesterday. This game was unusual by token of the fact that the players were all shapely and smiling senior girls. These two teams bear the scars of week's of hard practice with "professional" coaching by the varsity football players. The results of this game will appear next week.
