Ex-Counselor (Now Schoolmarm) Leonardy Teaches Students How to Argue the Point
Mrs. Herberta Leonardy practiced law in Sanford courts for 15 years before switching to the teaching profession-and her students at Ponce de Leon High are reaping the rewards of her ability to argue a point or debate an issue. Two years ago her Coral Gables platform-proteges local, state, regional and national debating competitions. no stopping them. "Oh, heavens, Ponce students have won so many debating championships this year it would take an entire issue of the Riviera-Times to tell about them!" the graying, smiling schoolmarm declares. Among the pupils to whom Mrs. Leonardy will point proudly at the drop of a rebuttal are Darryl McCall, who won (among other things!) the state and regional American Legion debating awards; Dolores Wright, winner of the state dramatic declamation title and Denis O'Donovan who is headed for national competition after capturing regional honors in the Optimist Club's oratorical contest at St. Petersburg. Emphasizes Confidence "I try to inspire my students with self-confidence. Thus each student enters a debate knowing he's going to win," Mrs. Leonardy said in explaining the secret of turning out so many winning debaters. But while Ponce debaters have been talking up a storm that's swept their opponents before them, honors and recognition have also been heaped upon their tutor. This morning, at a special awards assembly at the high school, Mrs. Leonardy received the American Legion's national citation to distinguished service in oratorical and debate training. Last week she was named president of the Dade County Classroom Teachers' Association, which embraces more than 1,500 teachers, and the new president is already busy on a program which will emphasize the importance of the individual teacher to the organization as a whole. Possessor of Ph. B. and LL.B. degrees, Mrs. Leonardy in addition to her Ponce class work and extra-curricular coaching activities, finds time to serve as a psychology and parliamentary law instructor in the adult education division at the University of Miami. In between times she performs the duties of chairman of the State Debating Contests Board and chairman for the state Teachers' Retirement. Under her direction, the retirement group was primarily responsible for passage by the Florida state legislature of a long-sought teachers' retirement bill. Work necessitated by the presidency of the County Classroom Teachers' Association may force Mrs. Leonardy to give up her debating classes at the end of this semester. But she's proud of the outstanding young debaters who have accomplished so much during her six years tenure as a Ponce instructor, and to these she gives her own special nod of appreciation and encouragement: Hayes Wood, Bill Pierce, Jack Hoehl, Harry Lewter, Martha Dunnagan, Moie Tendrich, Bill Greene, Bob Bryant, Charlie White, Bradford White, Helen Wooten, Mary Pierce, Darryl McCall, Don Hall, Sam Elakey, George Strehlke, Aileh McCormick and Dennis O'Donovan.
Valuable Air Equipment Assigned to Naval Reserve
"More than thirty million dollars of aviation training equipment, that was previously unavailable to the Naval Reserve, has now been assigned to the Navy's 21 Naval Air Reserve Stations for the purpose of training enlisted Organized Reservists in latest aviation techniques," Rear Admiral B. C. Ewen, Chief of the Naval Air Reserve Command, said in a recent Washington, D. C. Press Conference. The Naval Air Reserve Command is embarking on an aviation training program designed to keep its personnel abreast of most recent scientific developments, in order to insure a well-trained air reserve, capable of providing the necessary additional strength to augment regular fleet units during emergencies, the Admiral pointed out. He said that emphasis is now being placed on recruiting for aircrewmen and aircraft technicians to fill an organized enlisted complement of 20,000 men. Nearly six months have passed since the official beginning of the Navy's peacetime Naval Air Reserve at 21 point air stations located strategically throughout the U.S. This was the first reserve program to get underway since peace documents were signed, so Washington officials have watched with keen interest the Naval Air Reserve's solving of its organizational problems. The program has now enlisted sufficient officer strength and its stationkeeper program is nearly 80 per cent complete. Therefore each station now has machinery to operate the complex facilities necessary to service its Organized Reserve. "The greatest problem facing the program today is the acute shortage of reserve enlisted men", Ewen said. "The advantages of participation are so attractive that I know this shortage exists only because Navy and marine veterans are unaware of them", he add-ed. Men of the Organized Reserve have full opportunity to continue their aviation education, according to the Admiral. Each member of a carrier or patrol squadron each man will receive instruction in the special equipment in engines, radio, radar, or other specialty in which he is interested. Detailed courses have been established to thoroughly train reservists in all phases of aviation. For example a man desiring to qualify as a petty officer third class in aviation ordnance receives 168 hours of class room and practical instruction, plus all home study courses desired. This gives each man the chance to advance his military status while learning useful talents that can be applied to his civilian occupation. Former Navy men may enroll in the air reserve at the rating held at the time of discharge, and each man is encouraged to advance his rate. Many additional benefits are offered such as ship service stores and recreational facilities for his wife and family. Participation is voluntary and no committment is made as to length of service. Organized Reservists attend 48 instruction periods per year and are available for a two week cruise with the fleet. Instruction periods are scheduled week-ends when they will not interfere with civilian occupations. They are one hour and a half in length and two periods may be obtained in one day. One full days pay is received for each period. Thus, two months pay are added to a man's yearly income. "No one should overlook the fact that men who associate themselves with the Naval Air Reserve will be working toward an effective peace, and will insure adequate protection to our country from possible aggression, in addition to benefitting themselves with valuable skills", Admiral Ewen commented.
Sam Daniels Wins Honors
Honors came in pairs this week to Sam Daniels, student at the University of North Carolina and son of the Carroll S. Daniels, 1804 Columbus Blvd. First, Sam revealed that his fellow students had elected him an officer of the University Student Council and added "This makes me secretary-treasurer of a $110,000 budget!" He was also victorious in a campus election for the student council, while the campus paper carried an announcement of his election to the Phi Beta Kappa, national honorary fraternity whose key signifies highest scholarship achievement.
Talks Turkey On Cranberries
Gilbert D. Williams of the Drama Department of the University of Miami, yesterday talked turkey on the subject of cranberries, before members of the Coral Gables Breakfast Club. A cranberry bog or marsh, he declared, is a misnomer because cranberries are grown on dry land. However, Williams added, there must be facilities for flooding during freezing nights-which may occur in Wisconsin, one of the most important cranberry producing areas, any month of the year. Cranberries are grown in four restricted areas in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Washington-Oregon, the speaker said. Ninety percent of the crop is marketed through a farmers' cooperative which also handles canning. A newly planted area reaches commercial production in four or five years and continues indefinitely. Some "bogs" have been in full production for more than 100 years, Williams told club members. Lots of ideas are laid like eggs and left with no one to hatch them.
