Margaret Blue Chosen Royal Poinciana Queen

CORONATION BALL IS JUNE 6 AT GABLES COUNTRY CLUB MISS MARGARET BLUE —Mileo Photo To be acclaimed the "Queen" June 6th at the Coral Gables Country Club's gala Coronation Ball, and chosen to reign over the 10th Annual Royal Poinciana Festival which will celebrate the blooming of the world's most beautiful flowering tree from June 1 to 9th inclusive, is Margaret Blue, University of Miami senior, and one of the most outstanding graduates of South Florida's own university. Florida born — Margaret, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Grant Blue, is a native of Perry — she came to Miami when she was 5 years of age, and has received all her schooling in Dade County. Her scholarship and leadership manifested itself early, and even in Ada Merritt Junior High Margaret was president of the Junior Honor Society. As she continued her studies, so all sorts of honors continued to pour upon her. She won the American Legion medal in Junior High, the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Medal in Miami Senior High where she was also editor-in-chief of the 1943 annual, Mlahi; member of the Girls Council and National Honor society. When Margaret entered the University of Miami she continued her round of student activities—she was editor-in-chief of the Ibis in her sophomore year and as a junior she made Nu Kappa Tau, women's highest honorary society on the campus. Not only is she president of her sorority, Chi Omega, but she was president of Pan-Hellenic last year, and she is also president of the senior class of '47 and for two years has been president of the Baptist Student Union. It is almost a sure guess to say that Margaret is the "presidentist" Poinciana Queen who has ever been chosen! She is a member of Snarks, Quill, and Lead & Ink, her hobby is writing. A journalism major, she served the Hurricane as editor in the following departments; service, news, managing and associate. As a junior and again this year as a senior, she was elected to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Following her graduation, Margaret plans to go to New York to begin her career as radio script writer, but on Friday June 6th she will reign as the Royal Poinciana Festival Queen and the city of Coral Gables will do her just homage.

By HELEN REYNOLDS, SOCIETY EDITOR One of the busiest persons we know is Mrs. Herbert O. Vance of 4520 Avenue Santa Maria, who is leaving early next week on a vacation jaunt of three weeks. Accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Vance and her mother will visit Georgia kinsfolk and spend a little time revisiting their ancestral plantation, now the home of the commandant at Ft. Benning in Knoxville, Tenn., they will pick up Mr. and Mrs. Vance's daughter Jo, who, incidentally has just become vice president of her sorority, Sigma Kappa, at the University of Tennessee. The trio will visit Mrs. Bryan Hanks at their home in Cashiers, N. C., before returning. Mrs. Vance is probably identified with more club, school and civic committees than any other Miamian one could name. She has written, still writes publicity stories for her pet projects by the dozen, and no task is too great for her to undertake. Her aptitude to this type of work dates back to her newspaper days on the old Miami Metropolis, now the Miami Daily News. Mrs. Vance tells us that when she was a member of the staff, the office was piled high with coconuts, loads being given away daily to visitors. It was then she learned to meet people, found many of those same tourists becoming citizens. Mrs. Vance * * * Mrs. R. S. Bennett and her daughter Betty Ann Bennett have sold their home at 2301 North Greenway Drive to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Robinson, winter visitors for the last several seasons, from Long Island, N. Y. Mrs. Bennett and Betty are planning a long and exciting year ahead. Now the owners of a trailer they plan to travel the length of the United States, to winter in California—and then return to Coral Gables to reside. * * * Mrs. Creswell Stedman of 1014 Hardee Road is honoring her daughter Joyce with a tea next Thursday afternoon, on the occasion of her graduation from the Elementary (Please Turn to Page Ten)
