Biltmore Hospital Made Ready To Receive Veterans

FIRST PATIENT WILL ARRIVE ON MONDAY

By the end of this week all clinical and laboratory equipment and supplies necessary to begin operation of the newly established Pratt Veterans Administration hospital in Coral Gables will be installed and ready to serve the first patients moved from the Nautilus VA hospital on Miami Beach next week. Admission of new patients to the hospital, formerly the Miami Biltmore hotel, will begin after 8 a.m. Monday, July 7, Dr. Harold E. Machlan, hospital manager, announced. Until that time, all admissions will continue to be made at the Nautilus hospital. Transfer Effected Formal transfer of the Pratt General hospital from the army to the VA took place at midnight Monday, June 30, and immediately Tuesday morning the VA officials began moving equipment and supplies into it from the Nautilus. One operating room, one X-ray unit and one of each of the various clinics and laboratories will be set up and ready for operation by Monday so there will be no break in essential operation while the patients are being moved. Doctors With Patients Transferring of the ambulant patients will be made Monday, July 7. Each group being transferred will be accompanied by staff doctors and attendants. Personnel will be stationed at both hospitals during the move so there will be no break in care and treatment. Transfer of bed patients will begin Tuesday morning, July 8, in ambulances. The ambulance move will be supervised by staff doctors and attendants. Completion Date Complete transfer of the 300-bed facility on Miami Beach is expected to be completed not later than July 10, Dr. Machlan stated. Authorization has been made to operate the Pratt VA hospital at a 350 general medical and surgical bed capacity. Dr. Machlan points out that, although the new hospital will afford more ample space for operation of the various hospital clinics, all examinations for disability compensation and for hospitalization will continue to be made at the VA regional office medical clinic at Dinner Key.

Daily News Supplies Excellent Argument Against Consolidation

This Editorial is reprinted from the June 26 issue of The Miami Daily News. Tale of Two Cities Our west of Douglas road lies a modern Eden where everybody can eat his cake (with greenback icing) and have it too. Such, at least, is the impression presented by the Coral Gables municipal budget for the next fiscal year. Police and firemen are to receive $200 instead of $195 as a starter, with the top salary raised to $250 after two-and-one-half-years service. Other municipal employes, including the city manager, will receive pay raises, too. All this, be it noted, is to be accomplished with no increase in taxes. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Miami could get a municipal library building, new sidewalks, a Pan-American trade center, and $17,000,000 of sewer improvements-all within the same budget? Or even, like the Gables increase salaries of municipal employes?

Brigham, who will serve as chairman. Brigham stated that at least 60 men will be available for service in the Coral Gables area. Three Groups The committee will be organized into three groups, with a minimum of 20 men in each group, who will report to headquarters as soon as their families are secure and storm winds are subsiding. The men will be issued identification cards and Red Cross arm bands to enable them to pass police lines with their automobiles. Members of the post who are willing to serve on the committee have been asked to contact Brigham as soon as possible. They have been asked to write name, address and phone number on a post card and mail it to the chairman at 1225 Avenue Obispo. Brigham can be reached by telephone at 4-7521.

THE FORMER MISS EDYTHE WRAY, Radio Queen Winner in 1940, gets the latest in hair-dos from J. Baldi, Miracle Mile hair stylist and one of the foremost in the state, in preparation for a reunion with other former Radio Queens in connection with the 1947 Contest in Havana. Miss Wray, now Mrs. E. P. McDonald Jr., 121 Avenue Zamora, will be a guest of honor of the 25 girls competing in the 1947 Radio Queen Revue during their two-weeks vacation in Miami Beach and Havana, July 10-21.

Former Gables Radio Queen To Do 'Return Engagement'

Radio Queen Edythe Wray of 1940-now Mrs. E. P. McDonald Jr., of 121 Avenue Zamora will do a "return engagement" in the Cuban Tourist Commission's Radio Queen Revue this month. Only this time Mrs. McDonald will join the fun and frolic in Miami Beach and Havana, July 10-21, as a guest of honor of the 25 Southern girls competing in the 1947 contest for the title she won seven years ago. Originally from Richmond, Va., Miss Wray represented Radio Station WRNL of that City in the 1940 revue. After winning the Radio Queen title, she went into show business, making several extensive vaudeville tours, and winning stardom as a vocalist on the coast-to-coast radio show featuring Al Pearce and his gang from Hollywood. Appeared in Miami In her vaudeville tours she appeared twice at the Olympia Theatre, and also was featured in supper club engagements both in this country and in Havana. Mrs. McDonald retired from show business three years ago, and moved to Coral Gables about two months ago. Her husband is a National Airlines Pilot. Other previous Radio Queens who will make the Havana trip with this year with the 1947 contestants are Gloria Missel of Augusta, Ga., and Charlotte Mills of Charleston, South Carolina. Mrs. McDonald is highly excited over making the Havana trip with the 1947 contestants for her former title, and re-living a measure of the gaiety and excitement when she began her climb to stardom in the entertainment world.

Corsage to Kate Smith Brings Letter of Thanks

A letter received this week by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce from radio star Kate Smith expressed the singer's thanks for the "lovely Poinciana Corsage" that was sent to her. The corsage was the idea of former City Commissioner A. N. Houston, an unsolicited plug to the Royal Poinciana Festival on her coast-to-coast radio program. Corsage Shipped Houston, who was on the festival committee, suggested to Mrs. Mary T. Moore, executive secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, that Miss Smith be sent a letter of thanks and a corsage of poincianas. The corsage was contributed by Hans Wedemeyer of the Coral Gables Flower Shop. Miss Smith's letter, addressed to Mrs. Moore, was as follows: "Thank you very much for your nice letter and the lovely Poinciana Corsage which was so thoughtfully sent to me. I have been so busy preparing to leave New York until October that I didn't have a chance to write to you sooner. I do trust you will understand. Hopes to See Flowers "I was very happy to know you liked my mention of the Poinciana Festival in my program because while I was talking, I was also visualizing the beauty of it all and wishing time would permit me to see it in person. It certainly must be a beautiful sight and I hope some time to be present when this flame-like mass of blossoms are at their height. "With every good wish to all members of Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, "Most sincerely, "(signed) KATE SMITH."
