CORAL GABLES COUNTRY CLUBBER
By GORDON TAYLOR Tuesday, July 2, marked the opening night of the second play to be presented by the Country Club Theatre. So successful was the performance that a call went up for Director Sid Cassell. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Coral Gables Moosehead by yours truly which I felt to be the most appropriate token of appreciation to Sid for the grand job of directing which he did. Enthusiastic Group The theatre, composed of club members has become one of the most enthusiastic groups in our midst. It has been a source of fun for many old and new members alike and tomorrow will see the final performance of LADIES OF THE JURY topped off with a party which the cast and staff have well earned. There are always among us people with the qualities of organization and leadership who, once they begin a play, see it through regardless of theatrical pitfalls. We'll be ready to throw at random and still drop on deserving shoulders, but we wish to especially mention Sid Cassell, Blaine Haigler, "Nook" Tuckerman, Robert McVoy, Dalton Wright, Helen Pennock, Jackie Pierce, Betty Arnold, Boots Royall, Francis Hickey, Reff Elliot, Pat and Ted Hodge, Wynelle Cassell, etc., etc., etc. Without this sterling group we would not have had the thrill and pleasures of two successful shows. Readings Started Readings for the next play selection have already begun and the members are once again reminded that it is their theatre and every member of the Club is eligible to join in on the fun. A surprising number of Ladies of the Jury had never been in a play before. The stage and sets were all made by hand and with such skill that the theatre is prepared to stay for the next season. The next announcement. Future plays will cover the latest in Broadway hits and all of them will be chosen for the sheer fun of presenting them. Replies Received Frank Howard is going to come up with several more groups who will find the club an excellent medium of meeting others of mutual interest. The return replies to the Tournament and Trophies Committee questionaire have been coming in very well. Send yours in right away so we can start getting "you all" together. "Tiger Man," Sasha Siemel gave a wonderful lecture while showing his beautiful colored movies to the members and the invited guests of J. P. Riddle last Thursday. We all extend a vote of thanks to Mr. Riddle for inviting us to his party. The Club will have more such evenings of entertainment as time goes on. Commander Davis Back Commander Davis visited the tennis courts the other day with Mrs. Davis and their charmingly talented daughter. The Commander wished me to tell his many friends that he would be seeing them at the Club very soon. We will all be very glad to see him back. Did you ever realize what a heroic job our steady waiters have done to serve three or four hundred members at a time during some of our recent "special" dinners? They have tripled and quadrupled their regular stations just to keep strangers from coming in and giving our members poor service. George, Henry, Ciro, Fred, Oscar are really in there pitching to see that old reputations give way to better and newer ones. Gables Grads Offered Choice Army Careers
Under a new plan being put into effect immediately Coral Gables high school graduates can apply and be selected for training in certain specialized Army Air force training courses prior to enlistment and without obligation, Capt. Thomas A. Murphy, Miami recruiting officer, announced yesterday. The following are a few of the specialized courses open to men who enlist in the AAF for a period of three years; airplane and engine mechanics, control tower operator, bombsight mechanic, radio general course, radar fundamentals course, weather observer, photographer, diesel mechanic, and draftsman. In addition, there are over 20 other courses open. These men are eligible to apply for officer candidate school attendance and will also be eligible for many benefits under the GI bill of rights. They will be paid more than any soldier in history, and have every opportunity for promotion and advancement, Capt. Murphy said. Full information may be obtained by calling at or mailing a card to the Army Recruiting Station, 302 Post Office Bldg., Miami, Fla.
