Future for Floridians Optimistic

Floridians are substantiated in a more optimistic view of their economic future today than they were a year ago, the research and industrial division of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce stated yesterday in its weekly business review dealing with the State's economy. "Current statistical yardsticks uphold this opinion and, compared with the 'typical' year of 1937 or with 1935-1939 averages, show Floridians far better off in practically every economic category." It was pointed out that "an exaggerated conception of gain is derived from comparisons of dollar volumes because of the lessened purchasing power of the dollar. To offset this factor all dollar volumes of the State's business should be decreased by approximately one-third. "Using this adjusted yardstick, the per capita income of Floridians remains above the 1937 level of 44 per cent. (Without adjustment, per capita income to Floridians would show a 121 per cent increase over 1937). The comparable adjusted national figure is 19 per cent. "Another market gauge, frequently used and of particular reliability, is manufacturing employment. Applying this gauge to the number of production workers in Florida, an increase of 65 per cent is shown, 1946 over 1937, while the State's population increased only 40 per cent during that period. (Consideration of the factor of increased mechanization today and therefore relatively fewer workers, strengthens the evidence of the industrial development of the State).
