Footballs Take Spotlight As Softball Wanes

ST. THERESA LINE BOASTS 239-POUNDER Coach Homko Puts Football Squad Through Paces

Ten veteran St. Theresa campaigners and a brawny newcomer tipping the scales at 239 pounds were among candidates on deck when Coach John Homko put his football squad through initial fall workouts this week. The coach admitted cautiously that several new men "looked pretty promising," but it was on hefty Leo Jofffre that his eyes rested cannily. "Two hundred and thirty-nine pounds!" mused Homko as he watched the newly acquired behemoth go through his paces. "And he's in his first year, too," he added. Setting a fast clip at initial practice sessions were regulars Tom Fitzgibbon and his varsity co-captain, Quarterback Bert Stahl, End Gene Doll, Halfback Billy Frazel and several other holdovers from the team that last year won five against three defeats. St. Theresa's has seven games scheduled with the possibility that one or two more tilts may be added before the whistle blows to open the season, Homko reported. Four home games, to be played on the newly built field immediately north of the school on Indian Mound Trail are expected to attract a wide following among Gables football fans.

'All-Star' Junior Tennis Team to Carry Gables Colors In Miami Beach Tourney Country Club and Salvadore Park Join Forces for Flamingo Competition

Coral Gables' two major sources of junior tennis talent will join forces to form an all-Gables team to compete in the Flamingo tournament starting Sunday at Miami Beach. George Gaudet, pro for the Country Club and Leo Fullwood, tennis mentor at Salvadore Park, will designate a team to carry the Orange, Green and White colors of the City of Coral Gables from the stars of their individual clubs. The boys will compete in singles and doubles matches for three age groups: the 12 years and under division; the 15 and under classification; and youthful players 17 years or under. In addition, several newcomers to the local courts will enter the competition to gain experience in tournament play. Most promising of the novices is Johnny Herndon, a 12-year-old Gables protege, who has been taking the measure of more experienced racquet wielders despite the fact that he took up the game less than two months ago. Fullwood predicted a bright tennis future for two newcomers to the Salvadore Club, 12-year-old Johnny Block and his older cousin, Jerry Korfhage, 13. All three expect to take the court in the Flamingo competition. With the aid of a player loaned for the occasion by their opponents, the Salvadore Park racquet-eers defeated the Country Club of Coral Gables juniors, 7 to 2 last Saturday. Bill Merriam, a Country Club regular and member of the Ponce High tennis team, switched allegiance for the day to play with Salvadore when the latter's No. 1 man, Dick Murphy, was unable to play. Billy Larson and Herndon scored the Country Club's lone victories when they turned back David Harum, 6-1, 6-1, and Korfhage, 6-1, 6-0, respectively. Other scores in the inter-club duel were: Merriam (SP) defeated Dick Taylor (CC), 3-6, 7-9, 6-1; George Jochem (SP) beat Blair Harrison (CC) 9-7, 6-2; Al Harum (SP) turned back Dick Rutledge (CC) 4-6, 8-6, 6-1, and Arthur Schwartz (SP) defeated Tommy Holdcraft (CC) 6-3, 6-2. In the doubles, Merriam and Al Harum (SP) won from Taylor and Rutledge (CC) 8-6, 6-2; Jochem and Johnny Block (SP) teamed to take honors from Herndon and Harrison (CC) 6-0, 6-2, and Schwartz and David Harum (SP) accounted for Larson and Holdcraft (CC) 6-3, 7-5.

Three Gables Nines Compete In Gold. Ball

Three Gables softball teams—Carls Liquor, Daniels and National Airlines—were scheduled to take the field at Shenandoah Park last night in the second round of the Gold Ball Tournament. In the opening round Tuesday, third-seeded Carls, paced by the one-hit pitching of Charlie Knighton, blanked the F. J. Cavanaugh Post team 9 to 0 at Moore Park. That same evening at Edison Center, Jim Welch, speedy moundsman for Daniels hurled his team to a 9 to 0 victory over Wyndwood, allowing only two hits. The Daniels nine, which has the distinction of being the only boys team entered in the Gold Ball this year went into the contest with a 10 to 3 victory over Miami Boys Club still hot on their gloves. National, in its opening go, scuttled the Moore Park Juniors 21 to 4 at Edison Center.

Bumper Crop Turns Out For Ponce Drills; Coach Promises 'Attractive' Eleven

Rain drowned out a couple of Ponce de Leon football drills this week, but with Head Coach Johnny Noppenberg beaming like a searchlight the sunn asn't missed. "Wonderful squad!" glowed the tow-headed coach. "Big turnout! Fine spirit! Great prospects!" Noppenberg interrupted himself, calmed down, then suggested, "But I suppose you want facts?" He had 'em—to spare. Last year, the Ponce line averaged 148 pounds. "The average is about 165 pounds this year," the coach reported. With the Cavaliers scheduled to go against seven "heavyweight" elevens in its ten-game schedule, the extra poundage added up to ground-graining dividends. "Fifty-eight boys have been turning out regularly for workouts," Noppenberg offered. Four years ago, Ponce had only 32 candidates from which to build a team. "More facts?" queried Johnny genially. "Okay!" And no wonder. "We've got about 31 holdovers from last year to work with—and 11 of them are lettermen," he revealed. Spearheading the veterans are Tommy Gibson, George Lane, Malcolm Johnson, Billy Ward, Tom Fryer, Billy Veber, Doug Preston and Tom Fitzgerald. "And don't overlook John Gazlay," Noppenberg warned. "He made his 230 pounds count toward the end of last season. Then there's Overstreet—he weighs in at 207 pounds." Reversing the field, the Ponce mentor warned that too much importance should not be attached to weight advantage. "Take Doug Preston for instance", he explained. "You might think a high wind would blow him and his 120 pounds away—but he scored six touchdowns last year. That's good enough in any book." Summing up Ponce's prospects this fall, Noppenberg had two comments to make: "I've been watching the new fellows—and it encourages me to report that all of the veterans will have to fight for first-string berths," he declared. "Tell the folks we're going to have a mighty attractive team," he prophesied. Then he added, "I don't think the opposition will use those words!" The Cavaliers will go out of town for five games: Miami Beach, Lake Worth, Pahokee, Vero Beach and Ft. Lauderdale (Thanksgiving Day); in the Orange Bowl they'll meet West Palm Beach, Andrew Jackson, South Broward, Miami Tech and Gesu.
