A Gridiron of Our Own?
The now-you-have-it-now-you-don't negotiations to acquire the Biltmore golf course as a city-leased, municipally-operated project have engrossed the attention of all sports-minded Gableites. While our minds are still on the subject of an all-round recreational city program, it might be a good time to consider acquisition of other badly needed facilities. Scratch any Gables youngster and you'll find a prospective Davis or Blanchard, yet this city provides no adequate football field to encourage their tyro gridiron efforts. With the University of Miami planning an elaborate athletic field on its new main campus, city fathers might remedy the lack by taking over Quarterback Field, the present centrally-located hurricane training grounds. The property is large enough to contain one or even two regulation gridirons; turfed to withstand the worst that cleated shoes can do; and already equipped with lights - an important factor in a town trained to twilight sports activities. The Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center sponsored midget, junior and senior softball leagues and turned an apathetic baseball city into a bunch of rooting bleacherites. Gables people are already incurable football fans. A gridiron here in town, where they could enjoy games in active or spectator capacity, might go a long way to compensate for the fact that the Hurricanes can be seen only once a week during the season!
Poet's Corner ON ABSENT-MINDEDNESS
ON ABSENT-MINDEDNESS The dumb animal lives in a physical world, Unaware of the realm of the mind, With its senses alert. But its mind is inert, For of such is the way of its kind. And it cannot perceive nor at all understand That there is such a thing as a mind; Nor that thinking is best with the senses suppressed, The thinker quite deaf, dumb and blind. But intelligent man is well able to think, And occasions for thought oft' arise; He will then concentrate and a somnolent state Is all that appears to the eyes. And so thus he may be in his thoughts far away, From the realm of mere physical sense; With his acts automatic he seems quite erratic; It's just that his thinking's intense. So, be careful, observer! Unthinking, you may By derision or comment unkind, Indicate by such act the plain, simple fact That yours is an animal-mind! R.E.N.
OUR TOWN Fantasy, Fla. - By Al Harum -
The sign on the railroad station spelled out Fantasy, Fla. Just up the road apiece from the station the dusty road took a sharp turn and started ascending. Up and up and up it went, 'til it must have been at least five hundred feet above sea level. There the pines clustered and hovered over a small plateau. A light breeze blew steadily and we sat down to enjoy its caresses. Less than fifty yards from the small glade a stream flowed gently over nature-hewn rocks and the water sent forth a cool invitation. First we bathe in this stream and get really cool. The first plunge was a distinct shock - the water was like a pitcher of ice water which numbed our epidermis and all but decapitated the goose pimples which came forth to see what it was all about. Then we would briskly rub ourselves with a rough bath towel and the glow of the body would be as the light of thousands of bright bulbs on a dark night. Next we would unpack our fishing tackle and learn what other charms had this stream. In a few minutes a lively trout seized the fly and the reel whistled the joy of the happy fisherman. Some time later as the sun began reaching for tomorrow the trout bubbled in the frying pan. Well fed, happy and cool, your vacationing traveler climbed deep into a sleeping bag and slept the slumber of the carefree and innocent. What a vacation spot! Two weeks of swimming, hiking, fishing-and right in a place called Fantasy, Fla. Two weeks of living with the birds and the small animals of the woods - and the trout, too (mustn't forget the trout!). Like all good things this vacation would soon come to an end and as we hit the sleeping bag that last night - all comfy with four blankets and the reflected heat from the camp fire - we sighed a powerful sigh. We were wakened by a strangely familiar sound. It sounded at first blush like an alarm clock. But it couldn't be! They don't have alarm clocks in Fantasy, Fla. "It can't be!" we mumbled. "It can't be," we shouted. "They don't have alarm clocks in Fantasy, Fla." "But they do in Coral Gables," the missus advised. "You and your dreams!" she added. Well, anyway, that's another vacation gone down in history! Fantasy, Fla. - Oh, boy!
And Now Here
Bill Gray postcards from the North Carolina mountains "Tell Kiwanis gang I am keeping up attendance...saw Leonard Usina at Asheville Kiwanis"... Bill reports that Earl DeNoon has arrived for a vacation and that a "formal welcome" is planned for him ... Georgia Pankey tells this one on her brother, L. D., in whose dental office she's been working: "When I told him plans for announcement of my engagement he declared he was delighted and that it was wonderful - then waited a brotherly three seconds before growling 'But you're not going to quit on me, are you?' "... Young Charles Robinson, son of Pete and Willa, counts his summer a success. After countless mouthfuls of water and bellywhoppers, he's finally mastered the "Penguin Dive" created by "Cliff", Tatem Hotel lifeguard... Judge and Mrs. C. S. Robertson and their grandson, Robin, Jr., all at the Louis K. Manleys. Upon leaving the four-year-old pressed an envelope into the hand of his hostess. On the outside was printed, "My offering for the work of the Episcopal Church School." Inside, Robby had neatly tucked - the nine of clubs from a deck of playing cards! Charley Gouveia flashes word from up New York way that even his Rebel wife is enjoying their stay in the nawth... "Check and beer are my daily diet here," he added. It took a vacation spent cruising in a sloop off the Massachusetts coast to convert John Halifax to steam. Well, anyhow, to an outboard. "All I heard was 'Lower the mains'l! Hoist the mains'l!' It's going to take me a month to recover from my 'aches and pains," admitted Sea-Dog Halifax... Bob Callahan swears he can hear the weeds grow on his grove south of South Miami. "You yank 'em up and they hardly wait for you to pass to grow back up again!" avers Robert. Met Charlie Leyden in front of the Gables Theatre and he informed with masculine condescension that his wife, Louise, used up three handkerchiefs during the heart-tugging feature, "The Yearling." Just why did you have to take off your specs and polish them so vigorously, Charlie? If you see a directory of Coral Gables ambling down Ponce say hello to it: it's Larry Larson. Larry wore a bright-patterned sports shirt into the Riviera-Times office the other day, was accused of stitching together some of the maps he designs and distributes. "Hey, that's an idea," enthused Larry. "If I bring in a white shirt will you print my map on the back?"... "Salty Dogs" are the latest refreshers. A Texas innovation, introduced here by Pat Hodge and her visiting sister, Grace Witherspoon, the "Salty Dog," is simply a Tom Collins made with salt in place of sugar. Al Harum went on the air, Friday, over WBAY, subbing for Jim Moore as Riviera Newscaster. Next day he anxiously asked printer Harold Johnson how he did. "About the same as other commentators," commented Johnson. "I almost turned you off four times." ... So you're kicking? Ed Wright received word from Pennsylvania that pork chops are 93 cents a pound up there. Former City Manager George Shaw inspected the apple orchards at former Tax Assessor Gerald Bowen in Middletown, Va., recently... the Kiwanis Club (sans piano player in the absence of Harry Rath) won't let orch leader Cy Washburn sound the opening note for the national anthem any more ... he had them 'way down in the cellar at a recent meeting ... the Frank Shattucks, formerly Gableites, are running the Wayside Inn up Virginia way ... Dr. Art Weiland is back from visiting his Illinois cattle ranch ... and Colonel Dan Ogle visited here with a party. Clyde and Ruth Higgins send word they entered the "blanket derby" first time during their western tour at La Junta and that Denver, Colo., is strictly a "three-blanket-city" even in mid-summer ... high point of the Bob McAvoy's' trip to the Carolinas was a trip to Mt. Mitchell, tallest peak east of the Rockies.
Facts About Florida
More than 100 million man hours are required each year to grow, harvest, pack and ship Florida's crop of vegetables, according to the Florida Vegetable Committee. Official dedication ceremonies for Florida Everglades National Park by President Truman are scheduled for December 5 to 15. The gala event will receive nation-wide publicity. Construction of Dade County's six-million dollar Rickenbacker Causeway, scheduled to open November 9, came near halt last week because of a nail shortage. Engineers scoured hardware stores throughout the country buying as little as a single pound of nails at a time, but they got the nails and the job goes on. Florida must retain 6,500 to 7,000 Bahaman and Jamaican farm laborers for the duration of the season's crop if we are to avert a serious labor shortage this fall and winter, according to the Florida Vegetable Committee. The Orlando Morning Sentinel is advocating that the state put a bounty on Diamondback Rattlesnakes. Ross Allen of Silver Springs has already done so and buys all he can get.
'Tough Guys' Sponsor Baby-Sitting Organization To Raise Pin Money
The Rev. Christopher Sparling today passed along a suggestion to Coral Gables lads faced with the problem of financing footballs, shoulder pads and helmets: baby sitting. Sissified? You'd get your head knocked off if you mentioned that word in the rugged Greenwich Village section of New York City where a group of teen-aged boys banded together to form "Baby Sitters, Inc." According to a clipping from the New York Times, forwarded by the vacationing Rector of St. Phillips Episcopal church, the boys went about their project in business-like fashion. Intent on service as well as funds the boys approached a Greenwich Village nursing center for instruction in the delicate arts of diaper changing and bottle feeding. After practicing first on dolls, the ambitious youngsters toted along infant sisters and brothers for a "graduate course" in affixing three-cornered pants on live models. In addition, their nurse-instructor cautioned them to make sure to find out where parents could be reached in event of emergency and to be sure to have the family doctor's phone number. They were also warned not to invite pals in when on a "job". "I thought this might be an inspiration for some boys in Coral Gables - where 'sitters' seem to be scarce", Dr. Sparling wrote.
CHILDREN DID IT
In conjunction with the Sesquicentennial of our national independence celebration in 1926, it was decided to reconstruct and restore the famous old frigate USS Constitution, affectionately known as "Old Ironsides." The contribution of $650,000 by the school children of America made this work possible.
NOW IT'S FOOTBALL
One of the most colorful and versatile officers of the U. S. Navy, four-star Admiral Jonas Ingram, famed as a fighting admiral, an athlete with a national reputation, a shirt-sleeve diplomat, and a skilled newswan, now retired from the service, is serving as Commissioner of the All-American Football Conference, a position which will utilize his varied abilities.
Enrolled in the Home Economics program of the State Department of Education are 7,827 schoolgirls.

Maternity Death Rate on Decline In Florida
Both maternal and infant death rates are gradually but substantially decreasing in Florida, the state board of health revealed this week. Dr. Wilson T. Sowder, state health officer, said that maternal rates per 1,000 births have dropped 54 per cent since 1941, or in round figures from 6.3 to 2.9. The drop in infant deaths has not been so marked but even so the decrease of 27 per cent from 43.3 to 2.9 is a substantial one. "Both decreases are gratifying but the figures are still too high," Dr. Sowder said, "No possible stone is being left unturned from a public health standpoint to reduce the deaths to a negligible figure." Dr. Sowder said that prenatal education and care is one of the predominate reasons for the drop in maternal deaths.

Famous Homes John Audubon's 'AUDUBON PARK' HOME
Even tho most of his life was spent in the field, giving us the paintings that have endeared him to nature lovers, Audubon dreamed of the time when his work would be done and he could settle down. So great was his fame, so well done was his task that his name was given to the land that he chose for his home. People are inspired to greater things when there is a picture of home in their hearts.
