Hurricanes Start Practice For Tough 10-Game Season

Close to a hundred candidates for University of Miami football berths started drills at Quarterbacks Field this week in preparation for a tough 10-game schedule that gets under way Sept. 26. With 33 veteran squad members on tap, Coach Jack Harding could have fielded three complete teams with varsity experience when the opening practice session was called Monday. To armchair quarterbacks who occupied the sidelines to watch the Hurricanes in action, it appeared that Harding was determined to arm his team this year with fumble-proof pass attacks. Veterans ordered to concentrate on aerial drill sped down the field nightly to grab passes barrelled out by strong-armed hurlers. Penalty for fumbles was a terse command to hit the road for a lap around the field. The Hurricanes open Sept. 26 in the Orange Bowl against Baylor of the Southwest Conference, then travels to Philadelphia to meet Villanova Oct. 3. Four home games are next on the schedule: Texas Christian, Oct. 10; Rollins, Oct. 17; George Washington, Oct. 24; and South Carolina, Oct. 31. After a game Nov. 8 with Cincinnati in the Ohio city, the Hurricanes wind up the season with three Orange bowl tilts against Vanderbilt, Nov. 14; University of Florida, Nov. 21, and University of Alabama, Nov. 28.

Salvadore Juniors Bow to CC Team

Coral Gables Country Club junior court starts swamped an opposing team from Salvadore Park 4 to 0 in matches played at the latter's courts over the weekend. Bill Merriam accounted for Salvadore's one tally when he defeated Dick Rutledge 6-1, 6-2. Otherwise, it was the Country Club's day, with Dick Taylor taking the measure of Al Harum 6-2, 8-6; Tommy Holdcraft turning back David Harum 2-6, 6-3, 6-3; Blair Harrison defeating Richard Johns 6-4, 6-0, and Johnny Herndon winning from John Brock. Rain washed out scheduled doubles matches.

Gables Netmen Sink Hollywood

The tennis team of the Coral Gables Country Club scuttled a team from Hollywood 9-1, in weekend matches at the local courts. Hollywood's sole victory came when S. Garrett defeated W. Pearson, 6-3, 6-2; Ben Boesch turned back Paul Henjum 6-4, 6-3; Dick Bell won over H. Seigler 6-0, 6-0; Buz Bismarek beat M. G. Goodwin 6-0, 6-3; Bob Paige defeated R. Smith 6-2, 6-3, and Larry Larson took the measure of H. Berman 6-1, 6-3. Froehling and Boesch were hard pressed to defeat Henjum and Pearson 15-13, 8-6 in the main doubles match. Bismarek and Bell teamed to defeat Goodwin and W. Berry 6-4, 6-1, and Paige and Larson won over Smith and Siegler 6-2, 6-2. In women's matches, the Country Club lassies bowed to Hollywood opponents 2 to 0. Mrs. Isabel Goodwin defeated Mrs. Marybelle Macy 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 while Mrs. T. Baumgardner turned back Mrs. M. Farris 8-6, 6-0. In making the principal address prior to the christening of the U.S.S. MISSOURI by his daughter, President (then Senator) Truman said, "The time is surely coming when the people of Missouri can thrill with pride as the MISSOURI and her sister ships . . . sail into Tokyo Bay." . . . Surrender papers were signed aboard that battleship! with art pencil and India ink—and the result appears in the next edition of the Riviera-Times. Moore started studying art as a hobby but gained the professional field when his cartoons were accepted by slick-paper national publications, trade magazines and newspapers.

Gables Liquor Dealer Wins National, State Ad Awards

Those zany cartoon characters, rhymes and Horrible Examples of Carls Liquor ads each week in the Riviera-Times, today can turned national advertising honors, for "conspicuous achievement and constructive leadership in retail advertising." "I'm pretty proud of the showing our 'rib-ticklers' made," admitted Carl Singleton, owner of the Gables store. "The only ads that topped them were executed by New York or Chicago agencies which have big staffs of admen and artists at their disposal," he noted. In addition to national recognition, judges declared Carls liquor advertising best in the state of Florida. Contest officials who awarded two certificates of merit to the local dealer were John Giesen, director, American Newspaper Publishers Association; Dean Charles M. Edwards, Jr., of New York University, and E. N. Mayer, Jr., president of the Direct Mail Advertising Association. The competition was sponsored by Calvert's. The ads, executed by Riviera-Times managing editor Jim Moore, appear exclusively in this newspaper. Ideas for the crazy-like-a-fox pictorial series spring from the funnybones of Singleton and Moore at daily conferences. "I suppose I should say we discuss them over a snifter of fine old brandy," said Singleton, "As a matter of fact, we confer over a cup of coffee at Jephson's!" With an idea arrived at, Moore sets his drawing board up against his typewriter and goes to work
