Central Miami News Letter

BY MARY HICKEY Everywhere we went this past week, the main topic of conversation seemed to be the weather, but at least we were more fortunate than some of our friends, for we didn't receive any post cards from vacationing pals gloating over the number of blankets they were using! We'll have to admit, though, that the weather did "Get us", and a few strolls around the neighborhood seemed to indicate that most of the "Frog Hollowites" were also indulging in as little activity as possible. Neighborhood Notes Those of us in Frog Hollow who use the 35th Street entrance to our little community have noted, time and again, the rather elaborate pillars of coral rock that stand guard at either side of the waterway. We've often wondered just how they happened there, and what their purpose could be and yesterday we found the answer. We learned, from very good authority, that those pillars are the only tangible evidence remaining of Mayor Dammers' dream of developing Central Miami back in the "boom" days and their original purpose was to serve as a gateway to Central Miami... a purpose finally fulfilled after more than 20 years. Incidentally, we understand that the people who live on 35th Street are in a slight quandary as to just what is their official address. It seems that certain records indicate the name of that street to be South Waterway Drive! Welcome Home Mr. and Mrs. Paul D. Trice and their 15 month old son, Donald, have just returned to their home at 2021 S. W. 60th Court, after an extended visit in the North. Mrs. Trice and young Donald spent almost two months with her parents in Wilkes-Barre, Penna., during which time they also attended the wedding of Mrs. Trice's sister. Mr. Trice joined them several weeks ago and they motored home in a leisurely fashion, spending several days' sight-seeing in the Carolina mountains. The Trices have called this section of the country "home" for a little over two years and joined the "Frog Hollow" community early in June. Mr. Trice owns and operates a garage and service station on the Dixie Highway, but says his favorite way of passing time is fishing. Mrs. Trice is a member of the Coral Gables Junior Women's Club and when her time is not taken up with "Donnie" likes to indulge in her favorite pastimes of playing the piano or singing. Meet the Newcomers Among the more recent arrivals in the community are Mr. and Mrs. Raymond P. Wallace of 6060 S. W. 35th Street. Mrs. Wallace, the former Elizabeth Muller, came here from Wyomissing, Penna. with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. F. Muller of 2200 Alhambra Circle a number of years ago. Mr. Wallace, a native of Hartford, Conn. was stationed here during part of his four years with the U. S. Navy, most of which was spent in Anti-Submarine Warfare aboard a Destroyer Escort. Mrs. Wallace is an accomplished musician, having studied voice at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and at the University of Miami, and prior to her marriage was Supervisor of Music for the school in Hollywood and Dania, Florida. Mr. Wallace is associated with Mr. Muller in one of Coral Gables' newest industries, Modern Textiles, Inc., a firm devoted to the manufacture of women's full-fashioned nylon hosiery.
