MISS VEEDER HAPPILY SURPRISED
Biggest surprise of all for Miss Georgann Veeder on her birthday, Sunday, August 24, was the party given in her honor by Henry Delling at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry O. Delling, 907 Anastasia. When Georgann walked into his home at about 8 p. m., presumably to meet his sister, Aline, and her escore, she had no idea that approximately seventy-five of her friends and college classmates were waiting to surprise her. Miss Veeder, daughter of the George Veeders, of 1220 Avenue Medina, is social chairman of Delta Zeta sorority at the University of Miami, where she is a sophomore. Henry is a junior at the University, and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Guests at the party included sorority sisters and fraternity brothers of Miss Veeder and Mr. Delling with their escorts, and many other friends from the college set. Entertainment included dancing, ping pong, shuffleboard, and refreshments.
Mrs. S. Ernest Philpitt of 1032 Avenue Palermo, who has been vacationing at Mt. Gretna, Penna., will leave this week for Harrisburg, Penna., to spend the month of September.

BY HELEN REYNOLDS, SOCIETY EDITOR Mrs. Edwin John Tilton. Jr., whose elopement-marriage was announced in last Friday's Riviera-Times, is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Harrison Shaddick of 645 Alhambra Circle. Like mother and dad, the attractive Catherine and Ed chose the story book style of marriage (popular since Romeo and Juliet) and motored to Folkston, Ga., where the knot was tied by County Judge A. S. McQueen. Prominent in the college set the new Mrs. Tilton is a graduate of Ponce de Leon High school and was valedictorian of her class. She was graduated in May from the University of Miami, a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Theta Alpha Phi, national honorary dramatic fraternity. She served in extra curricular activities as secretary of Panhellenc; treasurer of the Student Body association and was on the staff of the Ibis and Hurricane. Last June she was chosen one of the maids-in-waiting to the Queen of the Royal Poinciana Festival. Perhaps it was the influence of those gorgeous poinciana blooms, which caused the elopment, for Catherine happens to be the second Coral Gables maid-in-waiting to have figured in a run-away marriage since June week. A lieutenant in the naval air corps during the war, Mr. Tilton has taken up flying as an avocation, owning his plane based in Miami. Also a boat enthusiast, he owns his own motor boat and will probably make tryouts for racing come regatta time. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin John Tilton of Daytona Beach and Coral Gables, and a student at the University of Miami. The newlyweds are residing at 705 Avenue Majorca. Florida State University Phi Pi's are arriving today at the Coral Reef Hotel, Miami Beach, for their annual week's house party. One of the highlights for tomorrow is the luncheon Miss Jackie Jones will give for bride-elect Miss Patsy Crosby at which the 24 Phi Pi's will be guests. Busy Patsy and Jackie are among the Phi Pi's planning to attend the week's festivities with only the bay between their homes and the Atlantic. Miss Mary Catherine Moody travels the farthest—from Panama City. Jackie will be maid-of-honor and only attendant for the Tuesday wedding of Miss Crosby and Charner Skagseth which will take place at 7 p. m. in First Presbyterian Church. Tuesday was a busy day for the bride-elect. She was entertained at a luncheon at the Columbus Hotel by Dorothy Williams and in the evening a linen shower took place at the home of Ann Richey, 330 Avenue Menores, with Gail Perry as co-hostess. "It's heaven to be home," said Mrs. Gust Alexander, who with Mr. Alexander is back at 1410 Genoa Street after a motor trip covering 14 states and seven weeks. Mrs. Alexander claims she caught a mountain cold somewhere between Charlotte and Hendersonville, N. C., and only the Florida (Please Turn to Page Eight)

Junior Women Climax Series With Box Picnic Wednesday
Concluding their summer program of get acquainted parties, Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club members (new and old) held a gala farm party Wednesday at the home of Mrs. B. R. Fairchild, Orleander Court, South Miami. Guest of honor was Mrs. L. C. Olson, junior sponsor and member of the executive board of the senior club. Meeting at the clubhouse at 11 a.m. the farms costumed girls numbering 60 sped by automobile to the farm. Farm gear consisted of jeans and plaid shirts mostly. Now the Fairchild farm isn't an ordinary farm, they do not go in for corn and potatoes and all of the other farm essentials — the Fairchilds go in for airplanes and children, of which they have two each. Their children are Mary Jo and Randy. Mrs. Jack Trout, membership chairman for the juniors and her co-chairman Mrs. Bernard Good presented each new prospective member a yellow crepe paper bonnet, each old member a red one. The polk bonnets were designed by Mrs. Trout and made to each girl's measurement and were delightful little confections with ruffles and tiestrings. Charades introduced the new to the old and an arrangement of matching tickets paired a new and an old member off for the box luncheon at noon. The climax party followed a succession of morning coke parties which were invented to acquaint ten new members with ten old members and were held monthly at old members homes.

Mrs. Whitehurst and Claire formerly lived in the Gables for a number of years, and owned their home at 4307 Segovia Street.
