FORGE 'CHAIN PARTY' LINKS Junior Club Members Keep Phones Busy Planning Events to Swell General Fund
Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club members kept telephones jangling this week as they forged new links in their unique "party-chain" project designed to swell the organization's treasury. Mrs. Karl Madsen, co-chairman with Mrs. Thomas L. Campbell of the chain-party program, started the ball rolling with a dessert bridge for fellow club members at her home, 2311 S. W. 7th St. Each of the eight guests promptly responded with similar benefit events of their own for other junior clubbers. Acceptance of an invitation to a "chain party" obligates the guests to contribute a link of her own in the form of some sort of intra-club entertainment. Hostesses who have already accepted the chain challenge are Mrs. Thomas L. Campbell, Mrs. H. J. Coleman, Mrs. W. H. Cauley, Mrs. Fred Diestelhorst, Mrs. Robert Shelley, Mrs. Frank A. Taylor, Mrs. T. H. Chapman, Mrs. Bernard S. Good and Mrs. H. H. Burkhart, all of whom chose to entertain at bridge, and Mrs. Dan Sheffield and Mrs. Charles DeCamp who took their guests picnicking. Other party-givers now issuing invitations are Mrs. G. E. Patterson and Mrs. William F. Patterson who will give an afternoon bridge; Mrs. Stanley Biedron, who is to be hostess at a theatre matinee; and Mrs. Dave Bosworth, Jr., and Mrs. W. T. Price, Jr., who will entertain at evening card parties.

Hurricane - Wise Residents Take Blow in Their Stride
(Continued from Page Seven) is buy a dozen of the things-big ones!" Most Gableites spent the pre-storm hours scurrying around for food supplies or cooking roasts-but not Mrs. William L. Huntley. "I decided a hurricane would be a wonderful time to go on that diet my husband and I talk about-but never get to," she declared. "We had just enough snacks on hand to stave off starvation!" Despite invitations from neighbors on both sides of them at 725 North Greenway Drive, the Huntleys stuck to their "enforced fast" and depended on milk, cheese and crackers and pickles to tide them over. Their son, Bill, Jr., was en route back to Notre Dame and escaped the storm. Tiny "Torie" Hopkins, 15-month-old daughter of the S. Duffield Hopkins, Jr., 1403 North Greenway Drive, eperienced the first hurricane of her young life-and liked it fine. "She apparently thought it was a big show staged just for her entertainment-and was in a dither of excitement the whole time," her dad reported. With big brother" Hoppy", aged four, it was a different story. "He was plain bored because he couldn't go out and play." Society Editor Helen Reynolds announced by phone that she's swearing off vacations forever. "I spent the first week nursing an infected arm and the second nursing a hurricane," she commented ruefully. "Dust off that typewriter!" Were you puzzled by the unorthodox meanderings of the storm? Mrs. Lee Gebhart has the answer-it was following her! The Gables vacationer deserted Ponte Vedra Beach in a hurry when the blow was reported bypassing Miami and heading toward Jacksonville. At Vero Beach, she stopped by to visit friends just as they were alerted to expect full force of the southeaster. "I raced for the Gables and so did the hurricane," she said. "It was uncomfortably close to a dead heat!" It took a tempest to vindicate Mrs. Richard Oelkers' incurable habit of putting things by-"just in case." "The family always kids me, but they were mighty happy to take advantage of 'Mom's junk' during the hurricane!" the wife of State Representative Chubby Oelkers declared. The "junk" that helped keep the four Oelkers snug included: an alcohol lamp that was used to heat formulas for daughter Camille 15 years ago; two ancient kerosene lamps; a couple of barn lanterns, and "the darndest assortment of old candle stubs you've ever seen!" The Walter W. Wigmans greeted inquiries with the jubilant pronouncement: "We had a gas stove-hooray!" "With that and a deep freeze box filled with ice, we ate heartily and hardly realized there was a storm," they asserted. Except for debris from palm and pine trees, the Wigmans reported no storm damage to their South Miami estate, Curwig Pines.
