Southwest Sidelights

By Vera Barnes Today everyone is digging out after the well-known hurricane. And to everyone's glad surprise, the damage doesn't seem to be as bad as expected. Along Bird Road, from the Gables, west, the greatest damage seems to be in trees, shrubs and plants. The new housing section just north of Bird Road and west of Ludlum is practically shingleless today, so I imagine the people living there have been hoping the promised rains hold off. A few power lines are down, and a few Arboretum Damaged Out in Coral Lake Trailer Park there was quite a lot of damage to the trees and arboretum. It's a shame because the arboretum was a lovely spot, filled with rare trees and plants. Several of the Australian pines close to the office went down, blocking the road into the lower section of the camp. The PA system and the power lines are down all over the park, and several of the lighter porches were casualties. No one was injured, and several trailerites took to the shelters offered in the neighboring areas. Several had to take refuge at the Tropical Bar across from Tropical Race Track because of their pets. The shelters wouldn't admit animals, and these folks refused to leave their pets in the car or trailer. Some are sadder but wiser. The Bears left their pup in their car, and he ripped the interior literally to shreds. Some of the braver folks 'sweated out' the storm in the big club house on the grounds. It was a picnic-like gathering, with everyone sharing what they had in the line of food and drink. New Manager The park had just changed management, just in time to break in the new one, Mr. Freeman, in fine style. He's really been doing a fine job, and we've seen him around everywhere, trying to do what he could to make things easier for the people in the camp. I'll bet he wishes he were twins! Joe and Vera Sweeten have been building a new house, and Vera told me this morning, that the living room walls are down. And materials are so hard to get these days Porches Ruined The Guy Greens, the Griffiths, DeLongs, and Clarks were some who had their porches completely demolished, and the Hansens lost their roof. Several of the families had portable porches and had taken them down. Among these were the Franzs, Slingerlands, Leslies and Moffats. Several trailers pulled out the night before the storm looking for safer haven, and several trailers pulled in from Boca Raton and the surrounding area for the duration. They're already left, and were anxious to get back.
