TWELVE NEW TEACHERS BOLSTER PONCE STAFF

Because of an unusually heavy enrollment and additional subjects that were added to the curriculum this year, Ponce de Leon High School has added 12 new teachers to the faculty, Harry N. Rath, principal, announced today. Mrs. Judith D. Ellison, Mrs. Marjorie Wood have joined the English department. Mrs. Ellison, a graduate of the University of Miami, received her master's degree at East Carolina Teachers College. Mrs. Ellison formerly taught at Balboa High school, San Francisco, Cal., Shenandoah Jr. High, and Miami Beach High. Iowa Degree Mrs. Kerr obtained her bachelor's degree at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. She did graduate work at the University of Washington, Iowa State College, and the University of Miami. Mrs. Kerr, who, will teach both English and Journalism at Ponce, taught for five years in Iowa. She spent three years in the Women's Marine corps, entering as a private and returning as an officer. During her years in the service she did recruiting broadcasts over station WOV, in New York. Illinois Graduate Miss Wood, a graduate of Illinois State Teachers College, received her master's in Speech at Northwestern University. She is teaching both English and Debating and serving as part-time librarian at the Coral Gables high school. Two new teachers have been added to the social science department, Jack H. Kaspar, and Clarence H. Drepperd. Kaspar, a 1940 graduate of Cornell University, coached athletics at Resselser Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, before entering the service. He served overseas with the air forces for two and one years. He coached football, baseball, and basketball at Greenburgh High, White Plains, N. Y. Last year Kaspar taught at Little River junior high. Teeching History The versatile professor is teaching world history, civics, and mathematics this year. Clarence H. Drepperd, former basketball coach at Miami Senior High School, has been added to the Ponce faculty as a civics and history teacher. He will also act as head basketball coach. Drepperd, who was graduated from West Virginia University in 1932, was athletic coach and physical education teacher at Shenandoah Junior High School for eight years. He also served as head coach and physical education director at Robert E. Lee Junior High, and at Little River Junior High School. Aber Joins Staff New manual training instructor at the high school is J. M. Aber. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Central Missouri State Teachers college, and his master of arts degree at Peabody College. Before coming to Miami, Aber taught industrial arts at St. Joseph High School, St. Joseph, Mo. He also taught at Harlan city schools, Harlan, Ky. During the war, the professor taught aircraft drafting and machine shop at Navy air training center, Chicago, Ill. Before transferring to Ponce, Mr. Aber was an instructor at Miami Edison High School. Phys Ed Teachers The physical education department has been increased by two new members, Mrs. Pansy Adams and Joseph A. Krutulis. Mrs. Adams, a graduate of Polytechnic Institute, Auburn, Ala., majored in physical education and history. She taught for four years at Andrew Jackson High School, and for one year at Miami Beach High School. Krutulis, a University of Miami graduate, is teaching physical education, is serving as head line coach and acting as assistant line coach of football and baseball. Played For Hurricanes Krutulis played on the varsity football and basketball teams at the university while there. He served in the Navy from 1942 through 1945. The former finance director for Ponce de Leon High School, Miss Marie J. Gibson, has become a new addition to the Latin department. Oberlin College Miss Gibson, a graduate of Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, did graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Washington, and the Pennsylvania State College. She taught Latin in high schools in both Ohio and Delaware. Howard C. Doyle, a graduate of Yale University, will teach practical mathematics and algebra this year. Enlarging of the science department brought two new teachers to the Ponce staff. Teaches Biology Mrs. Jane Wardlaw Prettyman, a graduate of the University of Miami, taught at Ponce from 1934 to 1940. She left the Ponce teaching staff at that time to marry Major George W. L. Prettyman. Returning to the high school this year, Mrs. Prettyman will again teach biology. James Edward Davidson will also teach biology and general science. Davidson attended Harvard College, Cambridge University, England; Boston University, and the University of Miami. Before coming to Florida he taught at the Arizona Desert School, Tucson, Ariz; Lesley Teachers College, Cambridge, Mass., and the St. Mark's School for boys.

Richard Mack, Coral Gables appointee to the State Railroad Commission, left this week for Tallahassee to assume his duties as successor to the late W. B. (Babe) Douglass.

Ticket Sales Are Started For 'U' Symphony Series

Ticket sales for the University of Miami's approaching series of symphony concerts opened Monday at the University's ticket office, 340 S. E. First Street, Mrs. Marie Volpe, orchestra manager, announced today. Eight artists have been engaged to appear in eight pairs of concerts with the symphony orchestra, conducted for the fifth year by Dr. Modeste Alloo. Dr. Joel Belov is associate conductor of the orchestra. Schedule Told Schedule of the soloists and the dates on which they will be presented with the orchestra are as follows: Guiomar Novaes, pianist, November 2 and 3; Ruggiero Ricci, violinist, November 23 and 24; Helen Traubel, Wagnerian soprano, December 14 and 15; Gregor Piatigorsky, cellist, January 25 and 26; Witold Malcuzynski, pianist, February 15 and 16; Yehudi Menuhin, violinist, March 7 and 8; Muriel Kerr, pianist, April 4 and 5; and Alexander Kipnis, bass-baritone, April 25 and 26. Many of the artists have appeared previously with the orchestra or in other musical programs in the area. Only newcomer to Miami is the Polish pianist, Witold Malcuzynski, who was a pupil of the late Jean Paderewski. Opens Series Mme. Novaes, who opens the symphony series, has appeared twice with the orchestra in 1940 and 1941. She studied with Isador Philipp at the Paris conservatory. A former prodigy of the violin and now 26 years old, Ruggiero Ricci played the Mendelssohn concerto with the orchestra here in 1942. Another former child prodigy who made his official debut at the age of ten, Yehudi Menuhin, the American violinist, has made musical appearances in Miami, but this year will be his first performance with the University orchestra. Soprano to Appear The Metropolitan Opera's first Wagnerian soprano, Helen Traubel, will also be presented for the first time with the orchestra this year although she has sung here previously. Considered by Serge Koussevitzky, leader of the Boston Symphony as "the greatest cellist of our day," Gregor Piatigorsky will be making his third appearance under University auspices as will Muriel Kerr, young pianist. The series will be closed by the Metropolitan Opera's leading bass-baritone, Alexander Kipnis, who made the last of his several appearances with the orchestra in 1939. Each of the eight concerts will be presented on Sundays at 4:30 p.m. and repeated Mondays at 8:30 p.m., and they will be held as previously in the Miami Senior High School auditorium.

Gables Entries Are Sought for Tequesta Queen

Coral Gables girls who can qualify have been invited to participate in the Tequesta Queen beauty contest, a highlight of the opening of the $6,000,000 Rickenbacker Causeway and $11,000,000 Crandon Park, it was announced today by A. D. Barnes, superintendent of Dade County Parks. Entries are being received from Latin American countries as well as from all sections of the country. The girl selected as the Tequesta Festival Queen will receive a screen test from a major Hollywood motion picture studio — with a possible contract. Runners-up will be given opportunities for modeling careers with a top flight New York agency. Must Be Single All entrants must be single girls 18 years of age or older. Each entrant must submit two photos, one a head or head and bust view, the other a full figure view in a bathing suit. Photographs on a single sheet 8 x 10 1/2, glossy print, must be submitted before October 11. Name and address must be printed on the back of each view. Applicants receiving a favorable decision from screening judges will be notified to compete in person in the Tequesta Queen Beauty Contest at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne November 11. Attire for contestants will be regular one or two-piece bathing suits. Entry blanks may be obtained by writing: Tequesta Queen Contest, Dade County Park Department, Room 1302, Court House, Miami, Florida.
