INTRODUCING THE SOROPTIMISTS Virginia Sumner Picks Insurance For Life Career in Coral Gables
Sand in her shoes made pretty Virginia Sumner return twice to Coral Gables from her native Richmond, Va., after her arrival in 1925 in the hectic days of the golden boom. "I have survived the boom, the bust, several hurricanes and many rather warm summers, and still love Coral Gables," this Coral Gables business woman who says summer after twice returning to Virginia convinced that she would never return to Coral Gables or Miami. "But all the things they say about getting 'sand in your shoes' hold true in my case," she explained. Mrs. Sumner fifth personality in the series of Riviera-Times stories on successful business women of Coral Gables and charter member of the Coral Gables Soroptimist club, is an insurance agent. She is co-owner with her husband Wendell Sumner of the Sumner Insurance Agency at 139 Avenue Alcazar, which was established the year following the incorporation of the City of Coral Gables. Her first position, following her formal education in the Richmond schools, was in an insurance company office. She subsequently worked in a bank, a real estate office and for a mortgage loan company but returned to her first love for her life work. She is a member of the Insurance Women of Miami. The Sumner romance bloomed right in Coral Gables, for the couple met here and were wed in 1926. During the war Mrs. Sumner worked for the Dade County Defense Council helping with the elaborate defense work it planned and executed. She also helped the Dade County Safety Council with its "Shot from the Sky" exhibit. This was volunteer work. Member with her husband of the Country Club of Coral Gables, Mrs. Sumner names golfing as her chief form of amusement and relaxation. However she is quite interested in the stamp collection of her husband's, which he began as a hobby when a boy. "When you live in an apartment, you can't collect horses or elephants," Mrs. Sumner said, "but you can spend many an interesting hour with stamps - exchanging, buying and arranging them, and each new one presents a story rich in geographical history." The Sumners, Mrs. Sumner's mother, Mrs. Harry H. Owens, plus their wire haired pup "Ten-Ten" reside at 1010 Douglas Road. Mrs. Sumner -Pilkington Photo
