Seven Men First Customers At Woman's Dept. Store
Coral Gables' first and only complete department store for women opened its doors Monday morning-and seven men customers walked in. "Word got around that we had a full line of muslin sheets and pillow slips," explained Carroll S. Daniels, owner of the enlarged store on Ponce de Leon Blvd., opposite the Gables Theater. "Downtown apartment house operators arrived early to stock up." Gables women were not far behind in "discovering" the new department which offers, in addition to durable muslin bedding, Cannon's fine percale sheets and slips, fluffy bath towels, light-weight and all-wool blankets, and a generous assortment of kitchen linens. Shoes Featured Another innovation is the spacious shoe department operated by H. B. Hostetter, owner of Jacksonville's famed Lindell Shoe Store. Managed by W. J. Thompson, the footwear section carries California Cobblers and Johansen Juniors for women who like the comfort of play shoes, and a full range of sizes in Johansen and Valley dress and spectator sports shoes. "For those who have difficulty being fitted, we have corrective, three-way arch support shoes in all styles, ranging in width up to D's and E's," Thompson said. Old customers will now find a well-stocked notions counter, a colorful supply of cotton and silk dress materials, a new Butterick pattern department, racks of rain coats and stacks of umbrellas, and a "real" hosiery department at their service. The familiar lingerie, costume jewelry, purse and beachwear sections have been expanded into "little shops" carrying a tempting variety of nationally advertised lines. An enlarged dress salon displays frivolous cottons, tailored sportswear, and smartly styled afternoon and festive cocktail frocks, ranging from wispy elevens to sizes for the mature woman. Special attention has been paid, Daniels said, to the requirements of the "half pints," and a gay selection of half-sizes from the nation's leading ready-to-wear houses is being shown. "And don't forget to mention Daniels free lending library," cautioned the department store owner.

Bookie Raid
(Continued from Page One) Safety William G. Kimbrough and after probing the situation gave him a free hand to tackle efforts of any bookmakers to do business in the Gables "with no holds barred." The edict includes the taking of bets in private clubs as well as beer bars and other public places. With the word out in Miami that City Manager Richard G. Danner will tolerate no lifting of the bookmaking lid there, and with a city commission campaign in progress, the Miami gamblers are reported to be desperately seeking "new fields to conquer." Doors Locked The meeting with Safety Director Kimbrough was held behind locked doors in the city manager's office at 7 p. m. Tuesday, prior to the regular pre-commission meeting conference. Kimbrough, it is understood, asked commissioners if he was to enforce the law without discrimination and with no hands-off on any bookmaking operations reported to be in progress in private clubs within the city.

Parents Debate Sex, Taxes At Meeting
(Continued from Page One) tossed from the floor at board members: 1. How much of the two-mill tax increase would be devoted to school expansion? And, 2. Since building is booming, why cannot the extra revenue from new homes support the school building program without increase in millage? Henderson jumped to his feet to assure questioners that every cent gained by millage increases would be invested in new classrooms and schools. The question of inclusion of sex education in Dade school curricula found the School Board and the audience divided against themselves and each other. Weiss for Plan Weiss was outspoken in advocating the teaching of sex hygiene in school classrooms. "Schools today are bound by the old fashioned notion that the subject of sex is a bogey," he declared. "Sex instruction should be taken out of 'shock' category and taught intelligently as part of biology, hygiene and related subjects." Weiss stated that churches formed greatest opposition to sex instruction in classrooms. "I agree that schoolroom instruction would be unnecessary if the churches themselves would assume the responsibility — but they don't", he added. Called Super Fluous The board member's assertions brought an immediate reply from the audience to the effect that school instruction is superfluous if parents do their duty to their children. "But they don't!" said Weiss flatly. Just as flat was the contradiction of his statement by a mother who declared her firm opposition to the proposal. "My children are taught these things in the only proper place for such instruction — at home," she said. "Your children and a great, great many other receive proper instruction in the home from their parents — but the advantage is lost when their minds are corrupted by other children whose knowledge of sex and sex hygiene is obtained through unhealthy and inaccurate whisperings and rumors," replied Weiss.
